Toall'whom'z'tmayconcerm; Be "it known thatfI, Onossnnr Amnesoiv MONTGOMMERY BUCKLEY, a ,citizen of the UnitedKingdom of Great Britain and 'Ire- 5 land, and' 'resident of-Fairmount, 17 Drewstead road, Streatham Hill, London,
' i England, have invented certain new and usefiil Improvements in an Apparatus for Pre paring .Bleaching and the like Fluids, 0t:
which the following is aspecification, such aswill enable othersfskilledin the art to which it appertains to make and-use the same. This inventionirelates to electrolyticapparatus for the manufacture The invention consists in an improved form of such-apparatus whereby a" better circulation of the liquid is obtained and the apparatus canv at will be used intermittently 20 or continuously. v
- Itis usual ini'cons'tructingappafatus ofthis kind to em'loy two tanks or cisterns, Y one tank divide by a partition, and'to a1.-
range-the cathode in one of the tanks and 2.5fthe anode in the other. I,adopt this const-r-uction and may make the tanks of any suitable sha but insteadtofsimply immersing the an' esjin the usual manner I place them between plates of non-conducting mapassagebetween the angdesga'nd the lates and throu which the liquid 'is T owing'to t e emanatio oi the chlorin and oxygen gases from .the,an9des which'may gle to the verti- "cal. slfydesiredflthe 'uppenand lower ends of the passages betweenjh'e anodes and the plates are; immersedin theliquidso that it is if'reeto' ente'r atthe 'l owverend of: thepass 40 sages, to travel along same and to pass-out at j the higher ends thereof thus forming an inflow at the lower endfl'and ant-o itflow at the upper end, thereby producing the desired circulation, the fiowpor speed of which I inay' eiihanc'e by using coolingpoils', ."The
bottom of the cathode tank is so shaped that the caustic soda falling from thehegative cathode can be allowed to pass completely ior in part to the other tank, or-may be completelyshut off therefrom without interfering with the electric circulation from one tank to the other. A cooling coil, or more than one, maybe employed in the cathode tank and thedelivery' of the caustic soda may be achieved by sloping the floor of Specification of Letters Patent. of solution for they are of different densities,
:toward the tank b. and suchportion of it as rawn 1 respectively.
Patented Feb. 3, 1914;
l the cathode tank so that the caustic soda will pass from one tank tojthe. otherby gravity.
It is usual for an opening to be-provided between the two tanks for the purpose inter die, of maintaining the level of the liquid and employ such an opening but preferahly construct it in conjunction with a pipe or equivalent so that the opening" from the .cathodetank is at ortow-ard the upper" end thereof but communicates only with the lower. part of the anode tank and by this are 1 rangement I'prevent, practicallyto an entire degree, the mixing of the solutions, the pre-. vention of which is often very desirable if I will now describe my invention with refereizoeto the accompanying drawings, in
which \l Figui-e 1 shows a tank formed in two parts a and .bxin the former of which the cathodes c are arranged .while in the tank 5 theanodes d are placed between the platese which are so positioned astc leave narrow passages f. The bottom oi the tank a -is sloped so asto deliver caustic soda downmay be desired may pass through the tap '9 into the'tank I; while if the said tap is en'- tirely shut off the electriccircuit is main 30 terial-in such a manneras to leave. a small tainehby means of the opening h'which under the shield The opening h, in practioe, should be whatever 'sizeis necessary for the electrolysis without undue resistance.
Cooling coils j are shown in each tank and taps 1, 2-, 3 are provided to permit of continuous supply, continuous drawing off of bleaching solution and for draining purposes In Fig, 2 the general arrangement is much the s'ame' as that in Fig. land like reference letters af ieQempIoyed'but-theanodes and" their dividingplates are arranged vertically and'the'cooling coils are of a different form.
3. twotanks e and b areagain erhiployed and the arrangement of the anode's' d and their plates e are substantially as shown in Fig. 1. In thisexample the bottom of the tank a is tapered or cone-shaped and the cathode a with the coil 7' is adapted to be moved from one side of the tank to the other sothat the caustic soda formed in the tank will be deposited either on the left hand side so as to beentirely shut off from possibility of'passi'ng to the tank I) andmay i be drawn off by the tap 4:,
- hydrogen or, if the cathode is moved to the right hand side of the tank and the three-way cock 5 is opened, the caustic soda can pass from the tank a to the tank b. The bent pipe is serves to maintain the necessary connection between the two tanks as do the opening h and the plate 71 in Fi of the cathode tank and t e bottom of the anode tank. 1
It will be seen from each of these drawings that the cooling coils are so positioned as to receive the heated solution and by cooling it to promote the desired circulation. The anodes with their plates are preferably constructed so as to be mo'ved, withdrawn and replaced en bloc as is also the cathode and coil shown in Fig. 3.
The operations of the apparatus will beapparent to any person conversant with the manufacture of bleaching solution by elec trolytic apparatus who will observe thatthe gas from thecathode cannot possibly enter the tank in which the anodes are arranged but will pass upwardly and escape into the atmosphere while the caustic sodav formed in the same tank will, when required, pass into the anode tank and because of the circulation of the liquid therein will be diflfused around the lower ends of the anodes and drawn upwardly between them and the deflecting plates, while the level of the liquid is maintained byme'ans of the opening h or the pipe-7c. I
When the bleaching solution in the anode tank is of required strength the electric cur-J rent is shut off and'the tap g or"5"as,.the. case may be, is shut of so that the liquid in the anode tank can be drawn away and used as required. v
Should the solution required be sudh that caustic soda is not foundto' be desirable dririn the operation of electrolysis as when the so ution in the anode tank is to be used in bleaching substances such as oils and fa s; the entry of caustic soda to the anode tank; is prevented as by closing thejcock between the tanks or having the cathode as shown ini0. 3.
