Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 3, 1914.
Application filed April 17, 1912. Serial No. 691,372.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH B. JORDAN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Claflin, in the county of Barton and State of Kansas, have invented a new anduseful Horse-Collar Attachment; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to the art of horse collars, and particularly to a new and useful fastening attachment therefor, for connecting the adjacent ends of the collar.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this nature comprising simplicity, efficiency and durability, and one in which novel and desirable features of construction exist.
The features of construction are hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :-Figure l is aview in perspective of the horse collar, showing the improved attachment applied thereto and constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view. Fig. 3 is a View in perspective of the fastening attachment detached.
As to the accompanying drawings 1 and 2 designate two plates, one secured to each side of the collar, as shown at 3. The plate 1 is provided with an elongated slot 4 and a recess 5 in its upper edge. The plate 2 is provided with a tongue 6 struck out of the same. When the collar is placed on a horses neck the tongue 6 is received in the slot 4. The tongue 6 is bent at an angle to the plate 2, and the recess 7, which is constructed by cutting the tongue from the plate 2, registers with the recess 5 of the plate 2. The plate 2is provided with upwardly extending arms 2*, one upon each side of said tongue 6. Secured at 9 to the plate 2 is a spring plate or arm 10, the upper end of which is bent upon itself as at 11. The bent portion 12 of the spring plate or arm is bent or constructed to form a shoulder 13, which engages the edge 14 of the recess 5, to hold the sides of the collar connected and upon a horses neck. Said up- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for wardly turned arms 2 constitute means to engage the upwardly turned flange (in which the slot 4 is constructed) of the plate 1, to prevent the bar between the slot 4 and the recess 5 from entering between the tongue 6 and spring plate or arm 10 too far. The edges 15 of the recesses 5 and 7, and the ends 16 of the slot 4, which are engaged by the spring plate or arm 10 and the tongue 6, prevent lateral movement of the sides of the collar.
From the foregoing it will be noted, there has been devised a practical and desirable fastening attachment for a horse collar.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is In combination with a horse collar, a pair of plates secured to the outer faces of the adjacent ends of said collar, one of said plates having an upturned flange provided with a transverse slot and a transverse recess, the other plate having a tongue struck out of the same and adapted to enter said slot and terminating in a slightly upwardly curved portion, the plate having the tongue being providedwith a pair of upwardlyextending arms, one on each side of the tongue, the upwardly bent flange having a bar intermediate the slot and the recess, a spring plate secured to the plate having the tongue and having its free portion bent upon itself constructed to form a shoulder to engage said bar and overlying said tongue, said upwardly curved portion of the tongue arranged to engage the bent portion of the spring plate adjacent said shoulder, the tongue and the slot constituting means to pre vent vertical movement of the adjacent ends of said collar as well as to prevent lateral movement, while the upwardly extending arms are designed to engage the upturned flange to prevent the bar from entering too far between the tongue and the spring plate, as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my nameto this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RALPH B. JORDAN.
