To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OSEPH MERIT GARD- nnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement on Folding Bed Patent No. 1,025,391, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a bed which is adapted to be pushed into a housing, or recess, or generally into a location in which it will be out of the way and which can be drawn into position for use whenever re-,

quired.- I

The main object of the invention is to provide a bed which can be folded up into compact shape so as to take up minimum floor space.

Other objects of the invention will appear hereafter.

The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention and referring thereto:

Figure -1- is a perspective of the bed showing the bed in position for use; Fig. is a section on line 3-X3 in Fig. 1- the View being taken from the side of the bed and one end of the bed being broken away; Fig. 3- is a side elevation of the bed; Fig. is a section on line 2-X2 in Fig. 2 showing the locking device, which renders it possible to lock the bed in raised or lowered position, the view being taken from the head of the bed and a part of the foot frame being broken away.

The bed frame indicated at -1- may consist of side rails 2 and end rails 3 secured to castings 4 at 5 and of spring rails 6 secured to risers 7 which may be secured to side rails 2 at 8. Levers 11 are pivotally mounted in the end rails 3, as at 12. Pull rods 13 are provided having their inner ends pivotally secured to the lever 11 above and below the pivotal center thereof respectively. The outer ends of the pull rods are loosely secured to plungers 14 at 15, operating in a suitable casing secured to the bed rail 3. A coil spring 16 acts on the plunger so as to force it outwardly and into engagement with a board 17 in the casting 4; when matched therewith. A. bed clothes hanger 18 is secured to the side rail 2 by means of a binding screw 20 operating through a suitable bore in the upper face of the rail. To prevent the hanger from turning out of po sition a lug 19 is formed on the end thereof and adapted to engage a suitable perforation in the upper face of the rail 2.

The bed may be provided with a head frame 21 and a foot frame 22 hinged tolegs 23 at 24 and there may be'a brace 25 pivoted to head frame 21 and to foot frame 22 at 26 and to side rails 2 at 27 for the purpose of lowering the bed and raising the bed as ca tings 4 slide down and up on legs 23 as shown in Fig. 2. Legs 23 may have slots 28 and 29 located near the ends thereof for the purpose of engaging respectively with plungers 14 for the purpose of locking the bed in raised or lowered position. Legs 23 may be provided with revolving casters 30 at the lower end thereof. There may be springs 32 provided for said bed which may be secured to spring rails 6. Corner castings 4 may have a perpendicular opening through the center thereof of sufiicient size and shape to receive the legs 28 and are slidably mounted thereon.

The operation: The operation is as follows: In normal position, when the bed is not in use it will stand within the inclosure, or housing, or in a position in which it will be out of the way, as shown in Fig. 3. lVhen it is desired to use the bed, it is drawn out from the inclosure, or housing, until it is fully out into the room, or the position, in which it is required for use, the revolving casters 30 running on the floor. A slight pressure on lever 11 will release plungers in from slots 28. Then the foot frame may be raised so as to be perpendicular, when the plungers 14 will engage the bores 28 of the legs 23; and thus lock the foot portion of the bed in open position. The head frame is operated in the same manner. Then the bed is in position for use, the mattress and covers being already in position on the bed if desired.

It is thought that the construction, operation, and use of the invention will be clear from the preceding detailed description.

Changes may be made in the construction, arrangement, and disposition of theseveral parts of the invention without in any way departing from the field and scope of the same, and it is meant to include all such within this application wherein only a preferred form has been disclosed.

v What I claim is 1. In combination, in a folding bed, a hinged head frame, a hinged foot frame, a rectangular frame slidably mounted at its corners on the lower part of the head and foot frames respectively, braces having their upper ends pivotally secured to the sides of the said frames and their lower ends pivotally secured to the rectangular frame and adapted to raise the said frame when the head and foot frames are unfolded, and spring operated means for securing the rectangular frame in raised position.

2. In a device of the character described, a head frame comprising two .rigid vertical leg portions and an upper frame hinged on the upper ends of the leg portions and adapted to be swung to a horizontal position, a foot frame, castings vertically operative on the leg portions and provided with horizontal bores, horizontal rods connecting the castings, braces pivotally connected to the side rails and to said head and foot frames,

respectively, and adapted to raise the side rails when the upper frames of the head and foot frames are revolved into a vertical position, spring operated plungers carried on the inner faces of the end rods of the bed and operating through the bores in the corner castings to engage suitable bores in the leg portions so as to lock the bed in raised position, and means for withdrawing the plungers.
