Specification of Letters Patent.

. To (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that we, ARTHUR B. CooN and ALFRED VAN on SANDT, citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, and Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Building Construction, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention is an improvement in build ing construction, and has for its object to provide an improved anchor and tie especially adapted for use in connecting an ornamental facing, as for instance, of marble, glass, tile or the like, to a wall, to hold the said facing in the proper relative position with respect to the said wall.

In the drawings :-F igure 1 is a vertical section through a building showing the improved anchor and tie, Fig. 2 is a section at right angles to Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the tie, and Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 2 of a modified arrangement.

In the present embodiment of the invention, the improved anchor and tie are shown in connection with the wall 1 of a building,

and the anchor and tie are utilized to connect,

a facing 2 of tile, marble, glass, terrazzo, scagliola or any other material of like character, to the wall.

The anchor and tie comprises a bar 3 of suitable metal, having one of its ends curved laterally as shown at 4, in the plane of the bar. At the opposite end the bar is provided with an angular lug 5, the said lug extending from the bar at an obtuse angle. An opening 6 is provided in the wall by cutting the material of which the wall is composed, brick in the present instance, and the said opening is of greater width than the bar and also of greater depth.

One end of the opening or recess 6 is undercut as indicated at 7 to receive the curved end 4 of the bar. The facing material has one of its edges provided with a groove, the side walls 8 and 9 of the said groove meeting at an acute angle at the bottom of the groove. The groove is of considerable length: as shown, and the lug 5 of the anchor or tie engages the wall 9 of the said groove.

The facing 2 it will be noticed is arranged in spaced relation with respect to the wall, and the space between the facing and the wall as Well as the opening 67 is filled with a plastic material 10, capable of hardening, as for instance,concrete, cement or plaster of Paris.

The anchors and ties may be arranged at any required distance with respect to each other to hold the parts in their position and the said anchors and ties may be of any desired length and cross section depending upon conditions to be met.

Preferably the meeting edge of the adjacent tile or other material of which the facing is formed, is provided with a rib l1, fitting within the groove 89, and a layer 12 of cement or like material is arranged between the wall 8 of the groove and the adjacent face of the rib and between the meeting faces of the sections of tile or the like.

The ties are arranged between the separate tiles or other independent elements of which the facing is composed, and that portion of the body of the bar 8 adjacent to the lug 4 is held between the meeting edges of the said separate sections.

By making the groove 89 of considerable length as shown, the anchor and tie is capable of considerable adjustment. Preferably the said anchor and tie is arranged at approximately the center of the tile or other separate elements of which the facing is composed.

When the improved anchor and tie is in place, the facing is held firmly in its proper position. The filling of plastic material capable of hardening prevents the pulling out of the curved end of the bar, and the lug 5 prevents disengagement of the outer end of the bar fro-1n the facing element.

In Fig. 4 is shown a somewhat different arrangement, wherein the building element 2 is not provided with the rib 11. The groove 8-9 is filled with cement, instead of with a rib on the other building element.

We claim 1. A structure comprising a wall and a facing arranged in spaced relation with respect to the wall, and a filling of plastic material capable 'of hardening between the facing and the wall, and a tie for holding the facing to the wall, said tie comprising a plate or bar having one of its ends curved laterally in the plane of the wide dimension of the plate or bar and having at the other end a lateral lug extending at an obtuse angle to the plane of the plate or bar, the
