To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that-we, JOHN V. MoMANIs and WALKER L. SHERWOOD, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Montgomery City, in the county of Montgomery, and Kirksville, in the county of Adair, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Osteopathic Tables, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to tables for use by osteopathic practitioners in treating patients by moving or stretching various parts of the human body.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a table of the class set forth embodying mechanical structures which permit a multiplicity of adjustments and movements with ease of manipulation and with more effectiveness in correcting and curing physical irregularities of the spine and ribs, and especially the cervical and dorsal vertebrae, as well as ordinary curvatures and sprains, and, furthermore, to provide for relieving any friction on the chest of a patient when treating him and while face downward during movement of a portion of the table.

In structures heretofore devised by us pertaining to osteopathic tables, a main table is disclosed having a swinging section held in suspended relation thereto and capable of lateral movement as well as vertical adjustment and movement.

The main improvement in the present structure consists of a semicircular drop leaf or a dropmember interposed between the main table section and the auxiliary section. This drop leaf is adjustable to dispose the same on a level with the main table section or it may be lowered below the plane of the said main table section to avoid friction on the chest of the patient and injury to the clothing when the auxiliary section is swung from side to side or laterally.

The invention also consists in the construction and, arrangement of the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken through the under side of the table and showing a portion of the latter to particularly illustrate the mounting of the drop leaf relatively to the auxiliary section. Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical section on an enlarged plane taken through the auxiliary table section in advance of the drop leaf. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the table.

The numeral 5 designates a main table I having leg castings 6 secured thereto, there being two of these castings connected by a cross-plate or tie 7 to provide a pedestal for supporting the entire table structure. The leg castings 6 are of such form that the feet 8 thereof are spaced apart a considerable distance so as to give a stable support to the table as a whole to prevent tilting or dis placement of the table during the operation of the several parts in the treatment of patients and particularly in operating an auxiliary table section 9. The main table section 5 and the auxiliary table section 9 are essentially similar to the corresponding structures embodied in the tables disclosed by Patent No. 1,062,489, and between the main and auxiliary table sections a drop leaf 10 is mounted and is preferably of semicircular form, the adjacent edge of the main table section being constructed with a semicircular recess 11 to permit the drop leaf 10 to freely swing when locked to the auxiliary section in a manner which will be hereinafter explained.

On the center of one side of the plate 7 upper and lower bearings 12 and 13 are fixed, and therein a post 14 is mounted for rotation; and fixed on the upper end of the post is a casting embodying a central sleeve or hub 15 which rests upon the upper bearing 12 and likewise a sleeve or collar 16 is secured on the post 14 close to the lower bearing 13, and by this means the post 14 is prevented from slipping through the bearings 12 and 13 but at the same time a free rotary movement thereof is permitted in the manipulation of the auxiliary table section 9.during certain treatments. The casting embodying the sleeve or hub 15 has laterally projecting arms 17 and 18 which are connected by fulcrum pins or pivot bolts 19 engaging opposite extremities thereof to angle plates or fulcrum hangers 20 attached to the under side of the drop leaf 10, the latter being in turn hinged to the inner end of the auxiliary table sect-ion, as at 21. The arm 17 of the casting is also formed with an outwardly projecting lock arm 22 having an angular terminal 23 which is adapted to be engaged by a clamp comprising two clamping members 2 1 fulcrumed as at 25 to the upper portion of the plate 7, and between the upper ends of the members 24 the angular terminal 23 depends. An operating lever 26 is mounted to freely swing in the plate 7 between the lower ends of the members 24.- and has a clamplng head 27 of oval or any other preferred form which is operative by swinging the lever 26 to spread the lower ends of the members 24 and force the upper ends of said members tightly against the opposite sides of the angular extremity 23 of the locking arm 22 and thereby fix the auxiliary section as well as the drop leaf against lateral movement. The drop leaf 10 is locked to the casting embodying the hub 15 and arms 17 and 18 through the medium of a spring-actuated bolt 28 readily engage able at one side of the table and extending inwardly far enough to pass through a portion of the said casting. The opposite ends of the casting or the terminals of the arms 18 have angular supports 29 extending therefrom and formed with upper inclined edges 30 against which the drop leaf 10 has bearing when lowered and the pivot bolts 19 extend through the ends of the supports 29, the casting being shown as to its detail construction more particularly by Fig. 6. Thus it will be seen that the drop leaf 10 is held indirectly when lowered by the post 14: in view of the fact that the hub 15 of the casting is secured to the post.

The collar or sleeve 16 is provided at one side with a slide box or guide 31 having an opening 32 therethrough intersected by a pin 33, and adjustably movable through the opening 32 of the slide box or guide is an arcuate adjusting ratchet or bar 34 pivotally secured to a bracketor hanger 35 attached to'the under side of the central portion of the auxiliary table section 9 and having an angular handle or extension 36 extending outwardly close to one side of the auxiliary table section within easy reaching distance of the operator to change the position of the auxiliary table section when desired. The adjusting bar or ratchet 34 has a plurality of slots 37 in the under edge thereof adapted to engage the pin 33, the opening 32 being of such vertical extent as to permit the adjusting bar or ratchet to move vertically therein and become disengaged from the pin and then either move inwardly or outwardly to effect a further adjustment, this operation being carried on through the medium of the handle or lever extension 36.

The table as a whole may be suitably upholstered, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and, furthermore, attaching straps and holding devices maybe applied thereto at such points as may be found desirable and necessary.

From the foregoing the operation of the table will be readily understood. hen the clamp is loose with respect to the locking arm 22 the auxiliary table section may be swung laterally in opposite directions as may be desired, and, furthermore, the said auxiliary table section maybe adjusted at an elevation above or in a plane below the main table section 5, and if desired by holding the ratchet bar 34 clear of the pin 33 the auxiliary table section may be given a vertical rocking movement in addition to its lateral movement and the two movements together will effect practically a circular operation of the auxiliary table section for treatment ofthat part of the body of the patient extending over the auxiliary table section or the lower part of the body. The torso of the patient in the main rests upon the auxiliary table section with the chest located on the drop leaf 10, the latter being lowered so as to clear the chest when lateral swinging movements are imparted to the auxiliary table section so as to avoid injuring the wearing apparel or subjecting the patient to inconvenience by frictional contact with the moving part of the table at this point. It will be understood that the drop leaf moves with the auxiliary table section in addition to its independent adjustment or drop characteristic.

The improved table will be found exceptionally useful in treating various spinal and cervical diseases or irregularities and in view of the comparative simplicity of the with supporting means and the intermediate v section hinged to one of the remaining sections so that it may be dropped below the plane of the said sections, the auxiliary section being provided with means for raising and lowering the same above and below a horizontal plane.

2. An osteopathic table comprising a main table section, an auxiliary table section having a lateral and vertical movement, an intermediate drop sect-ion hinged to the auxiliary section and loosely filling the space between the latter section and the main table section, and means for supporting the several sections.

3. An osteopathic table having an intermediate hinged drop leaf or sect-ion, and means for causing the lateral movement of said section.

4. An osteopathic table having an intermediate drop leaf or section hinged at one end and free to move at the opposite end and having means cooperating therewith for laterally shifting the same.

5. An osteopathic table consisting of a main table section, an auxiliary table sec tion having lateral and vertical movements, and an intermediate drop leaf or section hinged at one end to the auxiliary section, and supporting means for the table.

6. An osteopathic table comprising a main table section, an auxiliary table section mounted for vertical and lateral swinging movements, and an intermediate drop leaf or section hinged at one end to the auxiliary section and having its opposite end in close relation to one end of the main table section.

7 An osteopathic table comprising a main table section, an auxiliary table section having a swinging movement above and below a horizontal plane and also laterally and primarily adjustable above and below a horizontal plane, and an intermediate drop leaf or section hinged at one end to said auxiliary section and adapted to be moved with the latter relatively to the main table section.

8. An osteopathic table comprising a main table section, an auxiliary table section having vertical and lateral movement, an intermediate drop leaf or section hinged to the auxiliary section and movable with the latter, and means for locking the auxiliary section and drop leaf against movement.

9. An osteopathic table comprising a main table section, an auxiliary table section having vertical and lateral movement, an intermediate drop leaf or section hinged to the auxiliary section and movable with the latter, and means for locking the drop leaf or section in elevated position in a plane coincident with the main and auxiliary table sections.

10. An osteopathic table comprising a main table section, an auxiliary table section having vertical and lateral movement, an intermediate drop leaf or section hinged to the auxiliary section and movable with the lat ter, and means for locking the drop leaf or section in a horizontal plane coincident with the main and auxiliary sections and also for locking the auxiliary section and drop leaf or section against movement.

11. An osteopathic table comprising a main table section, an auxiliary table section movable vertically and also laterally relatively to the main table section, a semi-circular drop leaf hinged to the auxiliary section, the main table section having a semicircular recessed end to receive the adjacent edge portion of the said drop leaf, and means for supporting the table as a whole.
