Description
(N0 ModeL) O. E. WALTON.
GYNEGOLOGIOAL STI RRUP. No. 858,518. Patented Mar.. 1, 1887.
a. lnventcnr Attorney CHARLES E. WALTON,
PATENT OF HAMILTON, OHIO.
GYN ECOLOGICAL STIRRUP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,513, dated March 1, 1887.
Application filed April 30, 1885. Serial No. 164,025.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. WALTON, of Hamilton, Butler county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gynecological Stirrups, of which the following is a specification.
' Thisinvention has reference to a contrivance for use by a gynecological practitioner in connection with gynecological manipulations and operations.
The invention relates to the construction of a foot-rest adapted for ready attachment to the rail of a bedstead or to the edge of a table, whereby the patients feet may be supported in a proper position.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View illustrating one of a pair of my devices, shown as attached to the edge of a table or similar article presenting its edge horizontally; and Fig. 2 a side elevation of the device when applied to a bedrail.
In the drawings, A indicates a portion of a table or similar article whose edge presents horizontally; B, the vertical transverse section of the rail of an ordinary bedstead, the edge of such rail presenting itself vertically; O, a jawed clamp provided with a setscrew and adapted to engage firmly the furniture part to which it may be attached; D, a parallel cylindrical rod or arm pivoted at one end to the clamp; E, a stop adapted to support the arm D in a horizontal position when the clamp is arranged with its jaw horizontal, as when at tached to a table-top or the like; F, a similar stop adapted to servein a similar manner when the clamp is set vertically, as when attached to a bed-rail or the like, disposed vertically, as B; G, a hub provided with a set-screw and adapted to both slide and rotate upon the arm and be fixed thereto; H, a foot-piece swiveled to the hub upon a vertical pivot.
(No model.)
In using this device two of them are attached to the bedstead or table top, as the case may be, at such distance apart as will bring the patients feet into proper position. The patient is then properly placed, with the buttocks at the edge of the table or bed, in case the nature of the work in hand calls for that position, and the feet rested in the foot-pieces, which will be adjusted along the arms or rods until the thighs are properly elevated, after which the set-screwsin the hubs are tightened. The swiveling of the foot-pieces upon the hubs permits them to adapt themselves to the plane of the soles of the feet and permits of a certain amount of transverse manipulation of the feet.
To provide a reversible gynecologicalstirrup with an open-jawed clamp is not original with me, and it is common to attach to special fixtu res on surgical chairs and tables foot-pieces having universal movements with reference to the fixtures. In none of the older devices, however, is the adjustable footpiece combined with an open-jawed clamp, whereby the clamp and foot piece co-operate in effecting the adjustment of the two stirrups with reference to each other and the furniture.
I claim as my invention- In a gynecological stirrup, the combination, substantially as set forth, of an open-jawed clamp adapted for attachment to the edge of a piece of furniture presented either vertically or horizontally, an arm provided with a footpiece and pivoted to said clamp so as to freely swing into a plane either parallel to or at right angles with the plane of the jaw-opening of said clamp, and stops E andF, formed upon said clamp in position to limit the swinging motion of said arm and support the same.
CHARLES E. lVALTON. I
