JOHN E. FINNEY, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
PLIER-WRENCH.
To all %710771 2'25 m (cy Concern Be it known that I, JOHN E. FINNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing al Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of lN ashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in PlierlVrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the aecompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in plier wrenehes, comprising essentially a fixed and a sliding jaw, having lever and ratchet mechanism for operating the movable jaw, means being provided to limit the outer throw of the movable jaw.
My invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically dened in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a wrench made in aceordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view showing one handle in position to allow the sliding jaw to move without interference with the teeth upon the handle.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a fixed jaw having a slot B formed therein and a handle D. The movable jaw is designated by letter C and is provided with a laterally extending shank portion E movable within said slot transversely and is provided with ratchet teeth F upon the.

pivotally mounted upon a pin R passed through registering apertures in the walls of said slot.
By the provision of a wrench made in accordance with my invention, it will be noted that, when the handle is swung to the position shown in dotted lines, the sliding jaw may be moved to its limit in opposite directions, its outer movement being limited by the tooth projecting from the end of the ratchet teeth thereon coming in contact with the shoulder upon the handle, thus preventing the jaw from being fully removed from the slot. By swinging the handle to its outer limit, the jaw may be moved to any adjusted position desired without interference between the teeth of the ratehet bar and those upon the lever. hen it is desired to compress the jaws against an Object the movable lever may be swung toward the lever of the fixed jaw and the jaws will be held in clamping relation with the Object which they engage.
`What I claim to be new is z- A wrench comprising a fixed aw with a handle and having a. transverse slot therein, a sliding jaw with a straight shank portion at right angles to the inner face of the jaw provided with teeth upon its inner edge, a projection at the end of said shank and eX- tending beyond said teeth, a lever fixed to the handle of the fixed jaw and provided with gear teeth upon the inner end thereof and designed to engage the serrations upon the shank portion of the sliding jaw, and a ratchet tooth upon said lever designed, when the lever is swung outward at right angles to the length of the handle to which it is pivoted, to be positioned in the path of said projection, serving to limit the movement of the sliding jaw in one direetion and allowing the same to move freely in the opposite direction, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN E. FINNEY.
