T 0 (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN L. LUNDAHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crookston, in the county of Polk and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Foot Measures, of which the following is a specification.

The invention provides a simple device to insure accuracy when ordering shoes by mail or when it is required to have shoes specially made for a particular customer so as to secure ease and comfort and at the same time obtain a neat and close fit.

The invention provides a base of sheet material which may be readily folded or rolled, said base being of a size to admit of the outline of the foot being inscribed thereon, a stop near one end of the base to engage the heel of the foot to properly position the same, a guide attached at its ends to the base and rovided upon its upper side with a scale graduated according to any sys tem of measurement and a width-measure slidable upon the guide and adapted to determine the width of the foot at one or more points in the length thereof, said points being indicated on the base.

The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring to the drawing, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is'a perspective view of a shoe measure embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section, the ends of the width-measure being brought together. Fig. 3 is an edge view of a portion of the device, the full lines showing the stop in upright position and the dotted lines indicating the position of the stop when folded.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawing, by the same reference characters.

The base 1 consists of sheet material, such as paper, cloth or the like, capable of being readily folded or rolled into a compact form, the dimensions of such base being ample to insure the inscribing thereon of the outline of a foot of the largest size. curacy to insure proper designation of the length measure or size with reference to the scale attached to the base. The stop '2 embodies a block 3 and a covering 4: of paper,

cloth or the like, said covering being stretched over the upper edge and the two sidesof the block and stitched or otherwise fastened at its ends or lower edges to the base 1. When the base 1 is extended or flattened out the stop 2 is held in upright position and when the device is folded or rolled the stop lies upon the base, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3. A guide 5 is arranged lengthwise of the base and is attached at its ends thereto, said guide consisting of a strip of paper or other flexible material and having a graduated scale upon its upper side to indicate length-measure or size of the shoe according to any system of measurement. The guide 5 receives a widthmeasure 6 which is slidable thereon, said width-measure consisting of a tape or strip having a graduated scale and secured to the guide 5 by means of a short strip 7 secured at its ends to the part 6 upon opposite sides of the guide 5.

The device is particularly adapted for ordering shoes by mail so as to insure a neat and comfortable fit, hence it is desirable that the device be of cheap construction so that when used a single time it may be destroyed. It is understood that the device may be utilized for receiving advertising matter.

When using the device the base 1 is eX- tended and the foot is placed thereon with the heel against the stop 2, after which the outline of the foot is inscribed upon the base by means of a pencil or like marker, the same being moved over the base against the side of the foot which serves as a guide to direct the marker in its circumscribing movement. After the outline of the foot has been inscribed upon the base 1 the width measure is moved to the required position and is passed about the foot, the measurement being noted and indicated upon the base or upon a paper separate therefrom. larly when a pair of shoes is made to order. It is to be understood that the foot is placed upon the base lengthwise of the guide 5 and with the latter occupying a medial position so that the circumscribing outline may project a like distance upon both sides of the guide.

When the device is constructed solely of stout paper the parts may be pasted and after the device has been used it may be cast aside because the primary cost is practically insignificant. It will be further n0- ticed that the device may be folded so as to be easily transported through the mails.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily ap parent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claim appended hereto.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is

A shoe measure comprising a flexible base having a length measure and a stop near one end of the base consisting of a block, and a covering extending over the upper edge and opposite sides of the block and attached at its ends or lower edges to the base, said stop being held in upright position when the base is extended and adapted to fold upon the base when the latter is rolled or folded.
