Description

A. KAUFMAN. V MEANS FOR OPERATING ELECTRIC SWITCH BUTTONS.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 2, 1913.
1,083,837. Patented Jan. 6, 1914.
I a citizen of the United turning head 3 ABRAHAM KAUFMAIB T, O1? SAVANNAH, GEORGIA;
reeasa'i.
Specification of Letters Patent,
" Patented Jan. 6, i hilt.
Application filed April 2, 1913. Serial No. 758,43?
To all whom it met concern: I
Be it known that it, ABRAHAM KAUFMAN, States, residing at Savannah, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia, have invented new and; useful Improvements in Means for Operating Electric Switch-Buttons, of which the following. is a specification.
The present invention relates to means foroperating electric switch buttons from points remote from the said switch, and resides in. the construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing there is illustrated a simple and approved reduction of my improvement to practice, it being understood, however, that such changes from the drawing may be resorted to as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the'said drawing: Figure 1 is a view illustrating the arrangement of my device upon a switch button for an electric lamp,
2 is a perspective view of the turn-button or switch attachment. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the same, illustrating the device connected with the switch.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral 1 designates an electric lamp which has its socket provided with the ordinary switch button or knob 2, whereby the light of the lamp may be turned on or off.
The numeral 3 designates a hat rounded turning head which is adapted to be detachwith the switch button. The has one of its faces provided with a rectangular slot 4:, of a size and shape to. receive the flat head of the switch turning knob or button 2. The slot 4t is of a greater length than is the length of the head of the knob or button 2, and the face of the turning head provided with the slot is preferably formed with a depression 5 which surrounds the said slot 4.
The numerals 6 and 7 designate spring members, preferably in the form of fiat plates. 'the member 6 is secured, as at 8, to the flat face of the turning head 3, but projects over the depression 5 as well as over the slot 1 at one of the ends of said slot, while the member 7 is secured to the fiat face of the turning head to the opposite end of the depression and slot, as indicated by the numeral 9, and this member also parably connected permits of tially overlies one of the ends of the slot as well as one of the depression. The spring members 6 and 7 thus have their free ends spaced a suitable distance away from each other, and normally lie out of contact with the inner wall of the depression 5. This a limited inward movement of the springs 6 and 7, so that when the edge of the flat head of the knob or button 2 is forced into contact with the springs, the said springs will give inwardly to permit of the passage of the head of the knob or button through the depression and to within the slot 4, after which. the springs will return to their initial positions and contact with the inner faces of the head of the switch member 2. If desired, and as illustrated in the drawing, the flat spring members 6 and 7 may have their adjacent ends slotted longitudinally, as at 10 and 11, so that the head of the switch button may be easily arranged within the slot l.
Secured, as at 12 and 13, to the diametrically opposite sides of the peripherally rounded edge of the turninghead 3, are cords or other flexible members 1a and 15 respectively, the said flexible members leading to a suitable point, such as a bed or couch, so that the occupant of the said bed may, upon exerting a pull upon the flexible member 1 1, rotate the switch member 2 to turn off the light from the lamp, or by exerting a pull upon the flexible member 15 will rotate the turning head in an opposite direction to cause the switch 2 to permit of the electric current flowing to within the lamp to light the same. The flexible members 14: and 15, are connected diametrically opposite the longitudinal walls provided by the slot 5, so that the flexible member 1% is partially wound around the turning head 3, and after the said member 14 has been operated, the second '[iexible member 15 will also be partially wound around the said lever. The cords 14 and15 may, to the eye 16 of a tape 17 which is arranged upon a-drum 18, and the drum may be mounted in a suitable casing 19 and provided with a turning knob 20. Also the drum may be suspended from a suitable hook A, which may be attached to the head board of a bed or to any other convenient support.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is:
1. In combination with a lamp having a if desired, be attached having one of its when the same is received within the slot to 4 retain the said head npenthe turning head,
two flexible members connected with the turning head at diametrically 'eppesitex points, a. drum having an operating lmeb and a tape wound thereon, and stud tape rectangular head, of a turning turning heed having one of its connected to the free ments. t
2. lncombination with an electric lamp provided with the .usnei switch ends of the fienihle elei eee eer extinguishing the" rounding the slot, each of said spring members hevin' one of -their= endssecured' to the face of t e'turnhaving a I head, .se&d,- feees preend with a depressien Sun We flat spr ng members,
vided with a slot .mg heed endits'free end arran ed ever the depression and slot to permit 0? an inward movement-0f the springs with relation t6 theswitch, when contacted by the head of the switch when the latter is forced Within the slot, and a pair; of flexible all members connected with: thelturning eed at diametrically opposite points thereen.
1 In testinien whereof I affix my signature in preseneeo two witnesses.
