CRACKER R CAKE BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led September 13, 1912.
Patented Jan. 6, 1 914.
serial No. 720,251.
To all ua om it may concern.'
lie it known that I, FRANK J. linnen, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Poughkeepsie` in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cracker or Cake Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cracker or cake boxes and one of-the `)rincipal objects of the invention is to provide a simple and etticient device of this character wherein access may be had to the interior of the. same irrespective of they location of the box whether piled in parallel rows two or more deep or not. l `requently these cases are arranged in rows parallel to each other so that it is impossible to pull out the drawer of the boxes a sutilcient distance to remove the crackers or cakes therein and where the rows are two or more deep it is impossible to raise the usual lid.
It is the object of this invention therefore to avoid these difficulties and the invention f consists in the combination of a cracker or cake box having a slidingr drawer the upper section of the front of which is hinged so as to be readily lowered.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a box of this character having the upper portion of the drawer front hinged and' provided with novel locking mechanism for holdin it in closed posit-ion.
Further objects of ie invention will appear as the following` specific description is read in connection with the accompanyin drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box showing thc lid raised, the drawer partially withdrawn from the casing and the hinged front. thereof partially lowered. Fig. 2 is a. vertical section through the box taken from the front to the rear thereof. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 9. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail horizontal sectional view. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the locking bar removed from the door.
Referring more particularly to the drawings the box consists of a Casin having sides 1, back 2, bottom 3 and lid 4 linged to the back for closing the upper end of the casing. The upper and forward ends of the side member are connected together b v a cross piece 5 which braces the side members and )revents their collapse or expansion. The ront edges of the side members are reinforced by a strip 6 so as to prevent accidental bending or lateral distortion from any cause. Slidably mounted in the casing between the sides l, the, bottom 3 and the cross piece 5 is a drawer consisting of side pieces 7, the bottom 8, back 9 and front 10. The front is flanged along its side edges as shown at 1.1 so as to engage the reinforcing strip G upon the sides 1 and limit the inward movement of the drawer. The front 10 is constructed in two sections 12 and 13 the former oi which is hinged as shown at to the latter section so that when boxes are arranged in rows of two or more deep and it is impossible to raise the lid 4 and there is insufficient room to pull out the drawer enough to remove the contents, the door or section l2 may be lowered to the position in Fig. 1. This door is held in raised position by a latch bar 14, constructed of resilient material and having its ends slidably mounted in clips 15 secured to the inner face of the bar. Connected to the intermediate portion of the bar 14 is a pin or stud 16 which extends through the front and is provided with an operating button 17 as shown. By pressing inwardly upon the button 17 the bar is caused to ex and its ends withdrawn from the notches 18 formed in the sides 7. With this type of can the grocer can stack his cans one upon the other to any height desired and if necessary he can arrange them in close parallel rows. If the cans are arranged singly the lid 4 can be used to gain access to the interior of the box or if they are arranged one above the other the drawer can be used to remove the contents. If they are arranged in rows one or more deep and it is impossible to get the drawer open sufliciently to remove the contents then the door or lsection 12 can be lowered and sullicient, room obtained for thel insertion of the hand and the removal of the contents.
What is claimed is In a cracker box, a casing open at the top and one side, a bridge piece connecting the sides of the casing adjacent the open' top and side, a hinged lid for closing the top and eovering the bridge piece, a reinforcing-'J in testimony whereof -1 ax my signature strip for the front edge of the sides and a' in presence o two wimesses.
drawer -slidably mounted in the casing A through the open side and having a flanged FRANK J MICK 5 front to engage the reinforcing strips for Witnesses: l
the inward movement of the' Ummm H. PmLms,
drawer. f EDNA' MfPHILLus. A
