Application filed September 27, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOREN W. EMLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rawlins, in the county of Carbon and State of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating Systems for Incubators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to incubators, and it more particularly relates to an improved hot water heating system for incubators.
An object of the invention is to provide for causing constant and even circulation of the hot water.
Another object of the invention is to provide for perfect drainage of the water pipe.
Another object is to provide for eliminating air pressure upon the hatch whileproviding ample ventilation therefor.
Other objects and advantages may be recited hereinafter and in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the construction embodying my invention, and, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same, from a differentpoint of view, the cover being removed.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 designates the body portion of the incubator, comprising the hatch chamber 2 and the heating chamber 3. A shelf 4 is formed at the junction of the heating chamber and hatch chamber, and upon this shelf is seated an arched bridge 5, the latter consisting of several upwardly bowed strips having their ends resting upon the shelf ,4 and having their middle portions crossed over the center of the hatch chamber. The shelf 1 supports the bridge 5 which forms a lattice partition between the hatch chamber and the heating chamber, said chambers having communication with each other through said bridge.
Upon a suitable shelf or support 6 is seated a suitable lamp 7, and above this lamp is a cylindrical boiler 8 having a cylindrical flue opening 9 extending concentrically therethrough, so that when the lamp 7 is lighted and placed with its burner in registration with the flue opening, the heat from said burner is imparted to the boiler,

for heating the water therein. A frustoconical coil of pipe 10 is seated upon the lattice 5 and has its end portions 10 and 10 connected to the boiler 8 and communicating with the interior thereof, at the top and bottom portions of the boiler. Coil 10 is in the form of a frusto-conical member having its widest coil at the base resting upon the lattice 5, said lattice also extending up into supporting contact with the narrowest top coil and with the gradually narrowing intermediate coils. The end of the base coil is extended laterally at 10', while the base coil is extended laterally at 10 A feed tank 11 communicates with the boiler through a pipe 12 which extends above the top of the boiler and supports the tank at a proper elevation above the boiler. By opening a valve 13, in an escape pipe 14, the boiler will be filled with water from the tank 11 which should be kept supplied with water.
In operation, the water rises in the boiler, as it becomes heated, and passes through the pipe 10 into the coil 10, whence it gravitates through the top, intermediate and base coils and returns through the pipe 10 into the lower portion of the boiler 8. While the water is thus gravitating through the coil 10, said coil is heated thereby and radiates the heat into the heating chamber 3 and into the hatch chamber 2, thereby heating the air in said chambers, and thus forming a cloak or hover of heated air over the hatch of eggs.
In order that the heat may be regulated as may be desired I have provided a thermostat the lever of which is seen at 15, which thermostat being of ordinary construction is not described in detail.
As the air becomes heated or cooled within the chambers it tends to increase or decrease the pressure therein, and in order to avoid undue variation of pressure, I provide ventilating pipes 16, which extend through the sides of the body 1 and are bent downward. By means of these depending pipes, any undue increase or decrease of pressure within the chambers is eliminated by the outflow or inflow of air, but because of the depending position thereof, the escape or inflow of air therethrough under ordinary conditions is eliminated.
It is obvious that the upper coils of the heating pipe, receiving the heated water direct from the water heater, will be hotter than the succeeding coils and if they were not raised gradually, in the frusto-conical or analogous form, or were allowed to remain in a single horizontal plane, those eggs under the center coils would be unduly heated, or those under the outer coils would be insufliciently heated. I therefore bend the pipe into the frusto-conical form, raising the hottest coils farther above the eggs Having thus fully described my inven- J tion, what I claim as new is:
1. In an incubator comprising a hatch chamber and a heating chamber above said hatch chamber, a partition between said chambers comprising a frusto-conical coil having its apex uppermost and above the central portion of the chamber, a'boiler, a flow pipe from the boiler connected with the apex or highest coil, and a return pipe connected with the bottom or lowest coil.
2. In an incubator comprising a hatch chamber and a heating chamber above said hatch chamber, a partition between said chambers comprising a frusto-conical coil having its apex uppermost and above the central portion of the chamber, a boiler, a
flow pipe from the boiler connected with the apex or highest coil, a return pipe connected with the bottom or'lowest coil, and a sup-- port for the frusto-conical pipe coil consisting of a plurality of upwardly bowed strips.
