MOVING-PIGTU'BE-FILM MENDER.
osasoo.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 6, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY ADAM Bun- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residin at Warrendale, in the county of Multnoma and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Moving- Picture-Film Menders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device by which the broken films of amoving picture machinemay be quickly mended during a performance, by a method hereinafter shown.
The object of my invention is to provide a device ofthis kind that is simple in construction, durable and inexpensive in manufacture by reason of its lack of intricate machinery and parts.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will be more clearly apparent from the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same containing a broken film; Fig. 3 is a section with the film removed, taken on line A A, of Fig. 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are details of the cams.
In the several figures of the drawing like characters of reference indicate like parts.
In the practice of my invention I employ a base-plate 1, to which is detachably mounted a slide 2, by means of dovetails 3, which fit into slots 4, of said slide 2. At one side of slide 2, are attached lugs 5, to which are pivotally fastened cams 6, by means of dowels 7 and knobs 8. The cams 6 have pins 6, and 7 respectively, attached thereto for purposes hereinafter fully described. On slide 2, is attached a clamp which consists of the following members; an angle plate 9, secured to slide 2, by means of pin 10; a metallic strip 11, pivoted to the perpendicular portion of angle plate 9; a leaf spring 12, fastened to the under side of metallic strip 11; a locking member 13, also secured to metallic strip 11, as shown. In the lower end of looking member 13, is an aperture 1 1, which catches on pin 15, when said locking member 13, is in the position shown. On the top side of slide 2, are placed teeth 16, spaced to conform to apertures 17, of film 18. The object of teeth 16, is to place each portion of the broken film in alinement.
, In order to operate my invention the baseplate 1, must be secured to a shelf or b ack t between the reel and re-wind of a movingpicture machine, with slide 2, so mounted thereon that it may be moved into alinement with the path of movement of the film, when said film is to be mended, and removed from such position when said film is acting normally. When slide 2, is in alinement with the path of movement of the film, the operator faces the front'of slide 2, (the side of said slide to which In 5 are attached belng considered as the ack), unlocks the clamp and raises it above said slide and the portion of the broken film that lies to the left of the operator is placed longitudinally of slide 2, so that the apertures 17 register with teeth 16. The clamp is then locked into its normal position with a small portion of the film projecting to the right of said clamp. The operator then attaches the film to the pins by placing portions of said film under pins 6 and over pin 7 as shown in Fig. 2. The cam to the left of the operator is then rotated in a clockwise direction which tightens the portion of the film lying intermediate the clamp and the pins. The portion of the film that lies to the right of the operator is attached to the pins and teeth in the same manner as the portion that lies to the left of the operator, with the exceptions that the cam is rotated in a counter direct-ion to that of the cam at the left of the operator, and said right-hand portion of the film is not fastened by the clamp, but is placed superjacent the portion of the lefthand end that projects to the right of the clamp and is cemented thereto. The clamp is then loosened and the cams rotated so as to allow teeth 16 to release the film, after which slide 2, is removed from alinement with the path of movement of said film, and the machine is ready for operation.
My improved film-mender may be constructed of any material and made of any size deemed suitable to meet all the requirements of such a device, and while I have described a preferred form of construction and combination of elements considered essential in materializing my invention, it will be understood that I desire to include in this application all mechanical equivalents and substitutes that may be considered to come within the scope of my invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention so that others ski led in t e art to which it appertains may be enabled to construct and use the same, what I claim and deslre to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the character described, a base-plate with transverse guides attached thereto, a slidable member mounted on said base-plate b means of said parallel guides, a perpend1cular lug attached to each end of said slidable member adjacent its scribed.
2. In a device of the character described, a. base-plate with transverse, parallel guides afiixed thereto, a slidable member mounted on said base-plate by means of said parallel guides, a perpendicular lug attached to each end of the back edge of said slidable member, and passing longitudinally thereof, a cam pivoted to each of said lugs, said cams passing transversely of the path of motion of the film and serving to aline each portion of the broken film with the other portion, means torotate said cams, teeth spaced to conform to apertures in the film secured to said slidable member and passing longitudinally thereof, a clamp comprising a spring, a clasp, an angle-plate, and a lever pivoted to said angle-plate, said clamp serving to, secure one end of a broken film superjacent said slidable member during the process of mending, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
