enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which' Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of an animal, and illustrating the use of my improved bloat needle thereon. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the preferred form of the needle. Fig. 8 is a front elevation of the point of the needle. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the point of the needle.
My invention relates generally to surgical instruments, and more particularly to an instrument to be used by veterinarians and others for the relief of bloat in cattle and other animals.
The ailment commonly known as bloat is frequently met with in animals, particularly cattle, which ailment is a result of the f0rmation of gas in the stomach, resulting from over-eating, particularly of green food, and where bloat occurs it must be relieved quickly in order to avert the death of the aiiiicted animal.
It is the purpose of my invention to provide a simple, inexpensive device in the form of a tubular needle which may be readily inserted through the skin of the animal and into the stomach, thereby permitting the gas to escape and thus relieve the bloated animal.
My invention consist-s in a short metal tube, one end of which is cut off at an acute angle so as to form a point having a pair of gradually curved cutting edges which will readily cut through the skin and flesh of the animal in such a manner as to leave a wound having clean cut edges when the instrument is withdrawn.
To the above purpose, my invention consists in certain novel features or construction hereinafter described and claimed.
Specification of LettersPatent.
Patented Jan. 63,1914.
Serial No. 611,129.
In the construction of the preferred form of my improved device, I make use of a small tube 1 preferably of metal, approximately f or 5 inches long, and provided on one end with a head 2 which is engaged when the needle is forced into the stomach of the animal, and which prevents the needle from being wholly forced beneath the skin.
A sharp edged point 3 is formed on the forward end of the needle by cutting off said end on an acute angle and by such formation, a pair of gradually diverging cutting edges 4: are formed which extend upward or rearward from the point until the diametrical center of the tube is reached and from such point the edges gradually approach one another until they meet at the rear end of the face formed by the cutting off of the end of the tube.
When the point of the needle so constructed is forced into and through the skin, a semi-circular cut is formed by the cutting edges, and as said cutting edges are sharp, the wound made by the cut through the skin has clean cut edges, and will therefore heal more readily than where the edges of the wound are torn and ragged. After the point of the needle has been inserted through the skin of the animal, pressure is applied to the head to force the needle the full length into the animal and as the point is forced into the stomach, the gas therein will find exit through the tubular needle, thereby relieving the animal.
A bloat needle of my improved construction is comparatively simple, can be manufactured at little cost, and by cutting the forward end of the needle ofi at an acute angle, a sharp point and a pair of gradually diverging cutting edges are formed which permits the needle to be readily inserted through the animals skin and flesh, and the wound formed by the insertion of the needle has clean cut edges which will readily heal without injurious after efiects.
I claim- The herein described bloat needle comprising a metal tube having a smooth unbroken exterior surface throughout its length, one end of which tube is cut off at an acute angle relative to the axis of said tube to form an entering point, a portion of the tube adjacent to said point being flat tened to form a blade, the Width of which is signature in the presence of two Witnesses, this 21st day of February, 1911.
