Letters Patent No. 108,334, dated October 18, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROOFING FABRICS The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same I, DRAKE W. DEMON, of Ithaca, Tompkins county, New York, have invented an Improved Roofing, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to utilize flax-waste and make it into a batting, and to saturate it either wholly or in part with asphaltic and coal-tar mixtures; and I make the waste tow of flax, combined with the waste haulm or sllives of the flax plant, into layers or rolls of batting, by any convenient process; and, by rollers, hot or cold, or other similar process, I cause the asphaltio mixture, coal-tar, or coal-tar resin, to penetrate the batting and make rolls or sheets of roofingmaterial.
When I use the waste tow of flax alone, it makes an excellent batting, but is more costly than when I combine, as far as possible, the shives with it; therefore it is to my advantage to use as much of the shives as I can in my batting.
Both the tow-waste and the shives-waste are very slow and dilficult to' rot, and they, unprotected, long resist atmospheric changes. Alone the batting is not water-tight, but, by any of the common prepamtions of asphaltic nature, it easily is made into an exeellentmoting sheet or material.
Further, I prefer to unite two-sheets of flax-waste them, the mixtures or material stated in my patent dated May 26,1868,No. 78,269, and in my patent dated April 2, 1867, No. 63,371, to saturate or blend the above-described sheets.
Claim.
I claim- A roofing-batting, made or w to, and made impervious to water by asphah l. tistc substances,
substantially as described.
l). W, UICSION.
