WIND-SHIELD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led December 7, 1911.
Patented Jan. 6, 1914:. Serial No. 664,431.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANK J. FALTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwalk, county of Huron, State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Vind-Shields, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to wind shields for automobiles and consists in the improvements hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l, is a section in a plane parallel to that in which Fig. 2 is shown. Fig. 2, is a detail elevation of a portion of said wind shield, the parts being adjusted so as to be in the same plane. Fig. 3, is a detail sectional View showing one of the joints and adjacent parts, the section being taken in a plane perpendicular to that in which Fig. 2 is shown.
B is a frame adapted to be secured to the vehicle.
D, is a plate of glass carried in the frame B.
Gr, is a frame in which is secured a plate of glass I-I.
I, I are rods, each of which has one end pivoted at L to one side of the frame B and at its upper edge, and the other end pivoted at K to the side of the frame G midway between its upper and lower edges. The joints L and K are such, that the respective frames may turn freely about them to any extent.
The rod I consists of hollow tubes united at their centers by a tubular turn buckle J, and having at their ends casings Q, Q.
M, M are wheels adapted to turn in the casings Q, Q. These wheels are provided with ratchet teeth m (Fig. 8).
N, N are pawls, which in this instance, consists of cylindrical rods fitting and adapted to reciprocate in the tubes constituting the rods I and having ends adapted to engage in the teeth m of the ratchet wheels M.
P, is a compression spring in the rod I pressing at one end against one of the pawls N and at the other end against the other of said pawls to force the same into engagement with the teeth of the wheels M, M. The frames G and B, as shown most distinctly in Fig. l, are integral and rigidly secured to the wheels M at their ends so as to clear the rods I entirely.
By this construction a large variety of positions of the shield may be secured and a neat strong and serviceable apparatus obtained, which can be made cheaply and easily assembled, and that may be conveniently adjusted to the position desired.
What I claim is A connecting rod and hinges for a wind shield consisting of a tubular rod having enlargements at its ends, a hinge mechanism in each of said enlargements, a ratchet wheel in each of said enlargements forming a part of the hinge, pawls iitting and adapted to reciprocate in said tubular rod, and a single spring interposed between said pawls and acting against each of said pawls to force the same into engagement with said ratchet wheel.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK J. FALTER.
