To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NIooLAs F. EGLER, a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Producers, of which the following is a specification.
One object of this invention is to provide efficient means for distributing the blast within the producer body, and while designed specially for bodily rotating producers, and particularly a producer rotating on an inclined axis, its use is not restricted thereto.
A further purpose is to provide for segregating the ashes in such manner as to prevent clogging and clinkers from forming, the construction being such that the ashes discharge readily and as rapidly as they form.
A further purpose is to provide an ash discharge neck of improved construction, particularly when used in connection with a blast pipe extending upwardly therethrough with the pipe supporting a blast distributing device.
Still a further purpose is to provide improved supporting means for the inclined rotatable producer body.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a producer constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional details on lines 3-3 and 44, respectively of Fig. 1. Figs. 5 and 6 are sections of modified forms of ash discharges.
Referring to the drawings, 2 designates the cylindrical producer body having its axis disposed at an angle of about 45 degrees, the lower end of the body carrying the bead-like track member 3 which engages and is supported against longitudinal thrust by a series of grooved rollers 1 journaled in the cradle-like frame 5. The upper portion of the body is sustained by suitably supported rollers 6. I
The body top or cover 8 carries upwardly extending neck 9, having a double wall 10 which forms a water seal chamber for the downwardly extending neck 11 of the upper fixed portion of the structure, the fuel entering at 12, and the gas passing off at 18. While the fuel may be supplied and the fuel inlet closed against escape of gas by any Specification of Letters Patent.

suitable means, I prefer to employ the screw feed 14 to which coal is supplied from hopper 15. A uniform feed is thus provided, and at the same time the fuel within the feeding device prevents gas from escaping therethrough.
Funnel-like extension 16 of the body is continued downwardly in the form of cylindrical neck 17 which telescopes the fixed ash discharging neck 18, the latter constructed with water-seal chamber 19 in which neck 17 turns. The lower end of neck 18 may be submerged in a water holding ash pit 20, from which the ashes may be removed in any convenient manner. The ash pit may be made somewhat deeper, as shown at 21, Fig. 5, and equipped with an endless elevator 22. Or, as shown in Fig. 6, the seal-forming pit may be dispensed with by placing a funnel-like member 23 at the base of neck 18, closed by bell 2 1, for discharging the ashes into a car or other receptacle, not shown.
Entered through one side of fixed neck 18 and extending upwardly therethrough into the producer body is blast pipe 25 which is braced to the inner upper portion of the neck at 26. Above the upper or discharge end of the blast pipe is the stationary blast distributer or baffle 27 the same maintaining its fixed position as the producer body rotates, carrying with it the coal which tumbles around therein as a result of the rotary movement and the displacing action of the baffle.
In the present embodiment the baffle or distributer is in the form of an inverted V- shaped trough disposed horizontally within the producer body and supported by the blast pipe. To make a secure connection arms or brackets 29 are extended downwardly from sides 28 of the distributer, with their lower ends forming the pipe embracing sleeve 30, the extremity of the pipe being entered in the transverse web member 31 bridging the V-shaped distributer below its ridge. At opposite sides of the blast pipe connection sides 28 are slotted in grate fashion, as indicated at 32, to permit the blast to pass out and distribute through the coal.
In the operation of the producer, coal is fed through neck 9 into the body as required, the neck also serving as an exit for the gas to ofl'take 13, both the coal inlet and'the gas outlet being open to the pro ducer body during the gas generating operation, the fuel within the passage leading to neck 9 preventing the gas from escaping in that direction. As the inclined producer body rotates around the fixed transversely elongated baffle and blast distributer 27, a much more efiicient stirring of the coal and intermixing of the blast therewith is secured than is possible from the tumbling of the fuel resulting alone from the body rotating on an inclined axis. The elongated fixed baflie has a stirring effect on the coal as it tumbles around in the producer body, the lefthand end thereof, as viewed in Fig. 1, stirring the same in a plane relatively near the grate, while the righthand end stirs the coal farther removed from the grate, and the portions of the baffle lying between its ends effectively stirs the intermediate portion of the body of fuel. And with the baffle utilized for its whole length as an outlet for the blast, the latter is thoroughly mixed with all portion of the fuel. T he result is that every particle of the fuel is subjected to the influence of the blast, the baffle constantly displacing the fuel with a plowing action as it comes in contact with the blast. Thus,
. every unit of available gas is secured from the fuel, with a consequent economy and greater uniformity in the quality of the gas produced as compared with results heretofore attained. Furthermore, the elongated baffle prevents the blast from taking a direct upward course to the top portion of the body, its only escape being through the baffle which distributes it most effectively to all parts of the fuel being gasified. Much fuel is thus availed of that heretofore has been wasted, every unit of gas being extracted therefrom and nothing but ashes and refuse passes through the grate to the ash pit. The grinding action of the grate is such as to prevent clogging, and by thus crushing the ashes any gas contained therein is liberated and passes upwardly into the body.
An important feature of the invention is the agitating means for insuring the downward movement of the ashes, the same consists of the toothed annular ribs 33 secured to the inner face of funnel extension 16 in the plane of the toothed or ribbed head 34: secured to blast pipe 25, forming in effect a grate. This construction produces a grinding action on the ashes, feeding them downward, and preventing clogging and clinkers from forming.
With the producer body rotating on an inclined axis, the material therein is constantly agitated and the blast is distributed therethrough in such an eliicient manner that absolutely all of the gas is released and nothing but ashes remains for the grinding action of the grate.

2. The combination of a producer body rotatable about an inclined axis, the body having a fuel inlet and a gas outlet at its upper end and an ash discharge at its lower end, a fixed blast pipe entered through the lower end of the body, and fuel stirring devices projecting laterally from the blast pipe, said devices formed with blast conduits for passing the blast laterally from the blast pipe and with outlets in said devices for distributing the blast to the fuel.

The combination of a gas producer body rotatable about an inclined axis, a blast pipe entered through the lower portion of the body, and an elongated blast distributer disposed horizontally at the inner end of and supported by the blast pipe, one end of the distributor extending into a lower zone of the body contents than theopposite end. 7
4. The combination of a producer body rotatable about an inclined axis, a blast pipe extended thereinto from below, oppositely extending horizontal blast-conveying fuel deflectors elongated transversely of the producer body and supported by the blast pipe, the deflectors having openings for distributing the blast to the fuel.
5. The combination with a rotatable gas producer body, and a fixed blast pipe extending thereinto, of an elongated inverted V-shaped blast distributing device having fixed position transversely of the body above the discharge end of the blast pipe, the sides of said distributing device formed with openings for the escape of the blast.
6. The combination of a rotatable gas producer body, a fixed neck-like member forming a downward extension thereof for the discharge of ashes, and a blast pipe entered and braced in the fixed neck-like member and extending therefrom into the rotatable producer body.
7. The combination of a rotatable gas producer body having a tubular extension at its lower end, a neck-like member fixed beneath the body and telescoped by said tubular extension and provided with a water seal chamber, and a fixed blast pipe entered in the neck-like member and extending therefrom into the producer body.
S. The combination of a rotatable producer body, a fixed neck-like member form body, and a blast distributer supported by the blast pipe and extending laterally therefrom.
9. The combination of a rotatable gas producer body open at its upper end, a fixed casing communicating with said end and with relation to which the body rotates, a gas seal between the casing and body, said casing provided with a fuel inlet which is sealed by the fuel against the escape of gas, and a gas oiftake in communication with said casing.
10. The combination of a rotatable gas producer body open at its upper end, a fixed casing communicating with the open end of the body and with relation to which the latter rotates, a gas seal between the casing and body, said casing provided with a fuel inlet, fuel feeding means within the casing and operating in conjunction with the fuel to prevent the escape of gas through the fuel inlet, and a gas ofltake in communication with said casing.
11. The combination of a gas producer body rotatable about an inclined axis and having a neck-like extension at its upper end, a fixed casing in telescoping relation with said neck, a gas seal for the telescoping parts, the casing having a fuel inlet, fuel feeding means within the casing and in conjunction with the fuel operating to prevent the escape of gas through the fuel inlet, and a gas offtake.
12. The combination of a rotatable gas producer body having a neck-like extension at its lower end, an ash pit, a fixed ash-discharge chamber open at its upper and lower ends with its lower end submerged in water contained in the ash pit, said chamber having a hollow wall forming a water-seal cavity in which the producer body extension is entered.
13. The combination of a producer body rotatable about an inclined axis and constructed with a neck-like extension at its upper end, a fixed casing with which said neck has a water seal connection, said casing provided with a constantly open fuel inlet and a constantly open gas outlet, fuel feeding means operating in conjunction with the fuel being fed to seal the fuel inlet against the escape of gas, a fixed blast pipe entered through the lower end of the inclined rotatable body, and an elongatedblast distributor disposed transversely above and supported by the blast pipe.
