A tm/mU UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE, I
RANK e. smrn, or ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY.
errninncn non sncumuc RAILS uron'rnn arms or n neinnoen.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I FRANK G. Snrm', a citizen of the United states of America, residin have invented a certain new and useful Appliance for Securing Rails Upon the Ties of a Railroad.
' appliances for fastening the lugs 6 v means which may be driven through the openings 7. 8 are additionaLlugs or flanges.
My invention relates to improvementsin and maintaining the rails upon railroad ties and may be used in combination with wood, metal or cement ties.
In the accompanying drawings I' have illustrated in Figured an application of my invention as applied to a woodentie. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view in perspective partly broken away and partly in cross I section showing some of the details, and Fig. 3 1s another view partlv in cross section showing the rail locked in position upon the plate 7 which is to be secured to the tie.
4 indicates the wooden tie usually'laid in P the road bed of the railroad, and 5 the Inc-- tallic plate which may be suitably secured or held thereupon by. suitable means such as and by spikes or other suitable stamped out of the plate 5 which also penetrate the tie 4, to giveadditional security or hold to'thc plate.
9 indicates in dotted outline the position of the base of the rail such as 10 and it will be observed that the 111 s 11 engage the base flange. 12 of the rail w ich is held thereunder by the lips or projections 13 also stamped outofthe plate 5. In order to prevent the rail from" becoming loosened a suitable securin bar such as 14 maybe employed.
the lug or lip 15 at one side and the lug or Specification of Letters Patent. Application med October 16, 1912. Serial at. 726,162.

lip 16 at the other side, both of which are preferably punched out ofthe plate 5, one
end of said barbeing turned upwardly to engage .the base 12 of the rail 10 as indicated the opening or port 18 in the plate'5 as at 1?, and the other end preferably terminatmg 1n a hook formation such as 17 to engage shown tobetter advantage in Fig. 3, the bar 14 being s'uflicient-ly resilient to be forced over theplate 5 and beneath the lugs or lips 15-16 until the end of the hook portion 17' V snaps into the opening 18 thus securely holding the combination in position. To me movethe fastening 'means t is then necessary to pry u the hook portion 17 with a crowbar or ot iersuitable means.
Of course it will be understood that eri ous modifications me be made in the general arrangement'an structure of the sevof the invention as claimed.
I claim: In combination with the railroad, a plate adapted to be secured to the tie, and means in combination therewith for securing the ra l thereupon, said means comprisin lugs stamped out of said 1 plate engaging t, e base of said rail, a bar adapted to engage otherlugs stam ed out of said plate and also to engage t ebase eral partswithout departing from the spirit.
rail and tieofa of said rail, and means in combination with said plate and said bar whereby thesame
