To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK J. I-IUMPHREY and HUBERT R. HUMPHREY, citizens of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve Mechanism for Gas-Lamps, of which the following is a specification. l
This invention relates to improvements in valve mechanism foi gas lamps.
Our improvements are particularly designed and adapted by us for use in gas lamps of the type illustrated in our application for Letters Patent filed February 15, 1911, Serial Number 608,695, of which application the present is a division. Our improved valve mechanism is, howevenreadily adapted and desirable for use in other structures.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide an improved valve mechanism by which the pilot is ashed upon the actuation of the mechanism to open and close the main valve. Second, to provide an improved valve mechanism which is comparatively simple and economical in` structure and easily operated and not likelyu to get out of repair or adjustment in use.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
We accomplish the objects of our invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying ,drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a side elevation of a gas lamp embodyingthefeaturesofourinvention. Fig. II is an enlarged detail, mainly in vertical section, through the main burner valve. Fig. III is an enlarged detail partially in vertical section,through the pilotvalve Fig. IV is an end view of the valve mechanism, the movement of the valve levers being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. V is a detail perspective of the valve stem, the ratchet member 15 and index member 17 thereon. Fig. VI is a detail side elevation of a modified construction embodying the features of our invention. Fig. VII is a detail view mainly in vertical section, through the valve casing of the modified structure shown in Fig. IV. Fig. VIII is a detail side elevation with the chimney casing removed, looking from the left of Fig. VI. Fig. IX is an enlarged detail elevation of the valve mechanism looking from the right of Fig. VIII.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are vtaken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to .the drawing, 1 represents the gas supply pipe; 2 the lamp casing, and 3 the chimney flues. The valve casing 4 is mounted upon the supply pipe coupling 5 by means of the screw 6 substantially as described in our said application for Letters Patent.
As the details of the burner form no part of the present invention, we do not describe the saine herein.
The main gas valve 7 is of the rotary type and controls the delivery of gas through the passage 8 in the valve casing 4 to the nozzle 9. The valve casing is provided with a passage 10 for the pilot 11 which is controlled by the valve 12. The valve 12 is threaded into the valve casing, the valve being of the needle type and coacting with the valve seat 13 as shown in Fig. III.
The main burner 7 is provided with a projecting valve stem 14 on which the ratchet disk 15 is secured by means of the screw 16 tapped into the end of the stem. This screw also screws the index member 17 to the valve stem.
The actuating lever 18 is rotatably mounted upon the stem 14 and provided with a disk-like ratchet member 19. These ratchet members 15 and 19 are substantial duplicates and are formed of sheet steel or the like, the ratchet teeth 20 being struck laterally therefrom. There are four teeth on these members so that the valve is given a quarter turn at each actuation, one turn opening, the next closing the valve, or vice versa. These ratchet members are held in yielding engagement and the lever 18 is returned toits initial position by means of the coiled spring 21 arranged on the valve stem. At one end the coiled spring is provided with an arm 22 secured to the stop pin 23 projecting from the valve casing, while the arm 211 at the other end of the spring is secured to the pin 25 projecting` inwardly from the lever 18. rfhe spring thus performs the double function of returning the lever to its initial position and also holding the ratchet members yieldingly in engagement. The lever 18 is supported in its initial position by the spring 21 against the stop pin 23. The projection 29 on the level` engages this pin to limit the stroke of the lever.
An arm 26 is adjustably mounted upon the pilot valve 12, the valve being threaded through the arm. The arm 26 has a longitudinal slot 27 therein with which the pin 25 on the actuating lever 18 engages. By thus connecting the parts, the pilot valve is actuated to flash the pilot when the actuating lever 18 is actuated and is closed by the return pilot lever through its return spring 21, so that the pilot is iiashed at each actuation whether the actuation is the burner valve closing or opening movement. The pilot remains flashed only so long as the actuating lever is held in its actuated position. V'I`he pilot is positively operated to liash the same and to cut oil' the additional or `flashing supply and can be regulated to adjust the amount of the hashing supply. This flashing on both the opening and closing of the main burner is of advantage as the pilot is relighted in the event of its having been extinguished as oy an explosion oi' the main burner or from some other cause, While the burners are lighted. As it is turned with an eXtra or hashing supply of gas when the burners are cut oil, it will be relighted from the burners before they are extinguished. This is of decided advantage as it insures the pilot being lighted when it is cut o from the main burners.
In the modification shown in Figs. VI to IX, our improvements are adapted to a structure in which the main valve 7 is positioned transversely of the position in which it is shown in Figs. I to V, the same being merely an adaptation of the structure previously described. In this construction, owing to the positioning of the pilot valve 12 above the main valve 7, the pilot valve arm 26 is connected to the actuating lever 17 by means of the link 28 instead of the pin and slot connection of the structure shown in detail in Fig. IV, the link being mounted on Having thus described our invention, what we claimV is new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a gas lamp, the combination with a main burner, a pilot burner, a valve casing, a rotary main valve, a pilot flashing and regulating valve threaded into said casing for actuation, said valves being arranged parallel, a slotted arm having threaded engagement with said pilot valve whereby the valve may be adjusted relative to the arm, an actuating lever rotatably mounted on said main valve and provided with a pin engaging the slot of said arm on said pilot valve, a ratchet member secured to said main valve, a ratchet member secured to said lever and coacting with said ratchet member secured to said main valve, and a coiled spring arranged on said main valve and connected at one end to said actuating lever to return the same to its normal positionand arranged to hold said ratchet members in yielding engagement.
2. Ina gas lamp, the combination with a main burner, a pilot burner, a valve casing, a rotary main valve, a pilot flashing andV regulating valve threaded into said casing for actuation,said valves being arranged parallel, a slotted arm having threaded engagement with said pilot valve whereby the valve may be adjusted relative to the arm, an actuating lever rotatably mounted on said main valve and provided with a pin engaging the slot of said arm on said pilot valve, a ratchet member secured to saidmain valve, a ratchet member secured to said lever and coacting with said ratchet member secured to said main valve, and a spring acting on said lever for returning it to its neutral position.
3. In a gas lamp, the combination with a main burner, a pilotburner, a valve casing, a rotary main valve, a screw threaded pilot flashing and regulating valve threaded into said casing for actuation, an arm having threaded engagement with said pilot valve whereby the valve may be adjusted relative to the arm, an actuating lever rotatably mounted on said main valve and having operative connection with said arm, a ratchet main burner, a pilot burner, a valve casing,
a rotary main valve, a pilot lashing valve, a slotted arm on said pilot valve, an actuating lever rotatably mounted on said main valve and provided with a ratchet member, a ratchet member with which said ratchet member on said lever coacts secured to said main valve, a coiled spring arranged on said main valve, a stop pin for said lever to which one end of said 'spring is secured, and a pin on said lever to which the other end of said spring is secured, whereby said lever is returned to its initial position and said ratchet members held in yielding engagement, said pin being engaged in said slotted arm of said pilot valve.
5. In a gas lamp, the combination with a main burner, a pilot burner, a valve casing, a rotary main valve, a pilot flashing valve, an actuating lever having operative connections with said pilot valve said lever being rotatably mounted on sai main valve and provided with a ratchet member, a ratchet member with which said ratchet member on said lever coacts secured to said main valve, a coiled spring arranged on said main valve,
a stop pin for said lever to which one end of said spring is secured, and a pin on said 20 lever to which the other end of said spring is secured, whereby said lever is returned to its initial position and said ratchet members held in yielding engagement.
