CORPORATION or NEW YORK.
' HAIR-QUEER. 1,082,784. spcificativn'vf Letters Patent Patented Dec. 30, 1913. Application filed March 4,, 1912. Serial No. 681,551. To all whom it may concern: tended to pass into the loop 2 and .be en- Be it known that I, Ancusrus ALBERT gaged by the notch 3. All of these parts WEST, a citizen of the United States, and are of ordinary construction and operate in a rsident of the borough of Brooklyn,
city and State York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair- Curlers, of which the following is a specification.
The subject of this invention is designed as an important improvement in means for operating or disengaging the locking arts of-hair curlers thatare secured by late ing, or those that are so constructed that; cermm of their parts are secured together by a transverse-.motion. In my with this improvement I have-employed a curler such as was patented to me some time since, but I do notwish it understood that I confine this invention to this par-' ticular curler nor in fact to any particular curler as I have found that it operates equally well with any of the numerous de vices in this general class. I have found that there is a decided objection to these curlers because it is found that a continued operation of them will cause a slight soreness of the operating thumb and fingers, and it is to overcome this objection that I have designed and executed this improvement, which is intended to facilitate the operation and enhance the value of a revious hair curler patented to me Marc 28th, 1905, Serial #785,844. The following is what I consider the best means of carrylng out this invention.
The accom anying drawings form of this speci cation, in which- Figure 1 shows in plan view a curler provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 shows in .elevation the curler shown in Fi 1 a part of operating, the hand of the operator being indicated .in dotted lines. Fig. 4 shows a modification of the structure and Fig. 5 shows this modified structure as a part of a curler of somewhat different construction. Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in all the figures where they appear. Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, at 1 I have shown the body portion of a curler provided which is produced a notch .3.- An eye or'loop 4 connects the tongue 5, withthe body portion and a reduced extension 6 of the tongue 5 is inof Newexperiments a well known manner unlatching by a downward and transverse pressure of a finger placed against the part 5, at a point closely adjacent to the loop 2 while the body 1 is supported by the hand of the operator.
As the parts of this curler must necessarily be made thin to obtain sufficient lightness and yet strong to operate with a desirable degree of satisfaction, it is found that the use ofa number of these devices one after another will cause a temporary soreness to .the finger of the operator, I have therefore placed a hump 7 at the point where the pressing finger or thumb will engage with the part 5 to unlock .it, and I have so proportioned this hump so that it does not in any way interfere with the op 'eration of the device, the hair usually wound about the tongue member 5 passing over the hump 7, without The hump 7 may be formed from a piece of solder or softer metal secured upon the upper side of the tongue member" 5, or it may 'be an elongated rib 8 punched or shaped from the tongue proper by having a portion of the metal from which the tongue is formed pressed upward or Outward out of the plane of-the tongue as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. This construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5 may be the prefer-= able one as it does not limit the pressure receiving space nor demand that the fingers of the operator shall be placed at any particular point along the tongue 5. The hump or raised portion 7 shown in Figs. 1 and 2 may also be formed by pressing upward a portion of the metal of the tongue 5 and other modifications within the scope of the appended claim may be made without departin from the principle or sacrificing the advantages of this invention.
Having. carefully and fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
new article of'manufacture consisting of a curler having a part thereof hingedly connected and ada ted to be latched to another part and adhpted to be disengaged from said latched action by a depressing and a transverse-motion, said hingedly connected part being provided with a smoothly rounded portion extending upward out of Interference of any kind.
