Application filed December 27, 1912. Serial No. 738,930.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALLACE B. KEITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ravensdale, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Can-Punches, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a device for punching cans to provide an outlet opening and a vent opening whereby the contents of the can can be readily poured therefrom.
The invention embodies, among other features, a device particularly adaptable for use in connection with condensed milk cans and in which it is necessary, in order to obtain a proper flow of the fluid from the can, to provide a vent opening to permit the entrance of air into the can so that the fluid can be poured out therefrom through an outlet opening in the can.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a can, showing my device in applied position thereon; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device.
Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose a can punch 10 comprising an upright 11 provided at the lower end thereof with a lateral foot 12 and terminating at the upper end in spaced ears 13. A handle 14 terminates atthe inner end thereof in a reduced ear 15 adapted to be interposed between the spaced ears 13 of the uprlght 11, a suitable pin 16 being passed through the ears 13 and 15 to swingingly support the handle 14: on the upright 11, as shown. A stop flange 17 is formed on the upright 11 by cutting away a portion of the upper end thereof, adjacent the point of pivotal connection of the handle 14 with the upright, and the said stop flange is adapted to be engaged by the inner end of the handle 14 in order to limit the downward swinging movement thereof.
A punch 18 depends from the under side of the handle 14 adjacent the free end thereof and a second punch 19 depends from the said handle adjacent the inner end thereof,
the punch 18 being shaped in the manner of a circular pointed pin and the punch 19 being preferably of an elongated shape to form an elongated opening in the top of the can 20, whereas the punch 18 is adapted to simply provide a hole in the can.
In the use of the device described the upright 11 is arranged adjacent the can, with. the foot 12 projecting beneath the lower edge of the can, the stop flange 17 being adapted to abut against the periphery of the can at the top thereof and for this reason the stop flange 17 is preferably grooved as shown. A downward pressure is now exerted on the free end of the handle 14, thus moving the punches 18 and 19 into engagement with the top of the can so that the punch 18 will provide a small round opening in the top of the can and the punch 19 will form an elongated opening in the top of the can adjacent the edge thereof, the elongated opening constituting a spout or pouring opening whereby the contents of the can can be readily poured therefrom when the can is tilted, whereas the small opening formed by the punch 18 constitutes a vent opening for admitting air into the can, thus facilitating the pouring of the fluid from the can.
The device described is simple and durable in construction and can be cheaply manufactured to ace mplish the desired result as described herein.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
As a new article of manufacture, a can punch comprising an upright terminating at its upper end in a plurality of spaced ears and at its lower end in a lateral foot forming a seat for the can, a handle having its inner end lying between the said ears and mounted to swing thereon, a laterally projecting stop flange formed with the said upright adjacent the point of pivotal connection with the said handle and having the face thereof curved to engage the periphery of the can, and a plurality of relatively spaced punches depending from -the under side of the said handle between its ends.
