UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFTQE.
ISAAC V. BILYEU, OF SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS.
RAILWAY-CROSSOVER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Isaac V. BILYEU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Sangamon, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Crossovers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in railway crossovers.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple device of this character, by means of which the right of way may be established for one of the intersecting lines.
Another object is to provide simple means for shifting the movable track sections of the crossing.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of the crossover. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts shifted into the second position. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the middle portion of the shifting levers. Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line l-l of Fig. 1.
teferring particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 represents a suitable base which is disposed to support the intersecting tracks A and B, these tracks including the rails 11 and 12 respectively. These rails have suitable attaching flanges 13 for securing them to the base. Each of the rails has an extension 14; which is grooved as indicated at 15, and in the angle of intersection of the extensions is formed a passage way 16, a guide member 17 being disposed out side the rails. At all four corners of the crossover the construction is identical with that just described. Arranged diagonally and crossing each other at the center are two bars 18 and 19, the upper faces of the outer ends of which are grooved diagonally as in dicated at 20 and 21, these grooved ends sliding through passage ways and through the guides 17. The grooves 20 are adapted to register with the inner faces of the treads of the rails 11, and the grooves 21 with the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 12, 1913.
Patented Dec. 23, 1913.
Serial No. 760,676.
rails 12 when the bars 18 and 19 are shifted into the respective positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The central part of the bar 19 is formed with an enlargement 22, in the lower face of which is formed a transverse groove 23, this groove being made on an angle of 45 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the bar. In the upper face of the central portion of the bar 18, and formed at the same angle to the bar is a transverse rib 2 1, which engages in the groove 23. Connected to the outer end of the bar 19 is a link 25, which is connected in any suitable manner to an operating lever, (not shown) for sliding the bar through the guides 17. Movement of the bar 19 causes the same to slide and present one or the other of the grooves 20 or 21 in registration with the rails 11 or 12, the engagement of the rib 2st in the groove 23 causing the bar 18 to slide through the passages 16 in which it is mounted. It will thus be seen that it is only necessary to slide one of the bars 18 or 19 to cause the simultaneous movement of the other bar. It will of course be understood that connections can be made to either end of either of the bars 18 or 19 forshifting them.
What is claimed is:
A crossover comprising rails arranged to form the sides of a square, a suitable base for supporting them, grooved extensions on the ends of each of the rails, the intersections of the rails being formed with passage ways, guide members disposed in the angles of the extensions, diagonally arranged crossed bars slidable in the passages and guide members, the end portions of the bars having transverse converging grooves for registration respectively with the intersecting rails, the central portion of one of the bars having a rib formed obliquely across the bar, and the other bar having an obliquely formed groove to receive said rib, whereby slidable movement of either of the bars will cause sliding movement of the other bar.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
