T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that We, ROBERT MARSHALL and ALBERT NORBURY, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of Bloomington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Crossings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to railway tracks and particularly to a railway crossing sometimes termed a diamond.
An object of this invention is to provide a railway track in which the grooves or spaces between the sides of the rails and the ends of the intersecting rails may be filled or protected in order that wheels passing over the rails and across the intersecting rails may be supported.
A'further object of this invention is to provide a railway crossing provided with means at each pair of intersecting rails for filling the space between the ends of the rails over which the cars are moving and the sides of the intersecting rails, the said device being adjustable in order that it may operate to close the spaces between the end of one rail and the side of the intersecting rail, regardless of the direction in which the car is traveling.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a railway crossing having space filling members and novel means for actuating or operating the members in conjunction, whereby they may be set in positions to make either track continuous according to the will of the operator.
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, in which-- Figure 1 illustrates a plan view of a railway crossing embodying the invention with the device set in one position of adjustment; Fig. 2 illustrates a plan view with the parts set in a different position of adjustment; Fig. 3 illustrates a view in elevation of one of the blocks or connections at the intersection of the rails; and Fig. 4 illustrates a top plan view of one of the members which coacts with the block.
In these drawings A denotes the blocks which are stationed at the intersection of the rails of two intersecting tracks, each of said blocks having a groove I), 6, extending in one direction and another groove I), 6', extending at right angles to the first mentioned groove. Each block is further provided with a groove 7 which extends from side to side thereof and diagonally with re lation to the intersecting rails of a track. 1 denotes a rail section between two of the blocks. 2 denotes one of the binding irons by which the rails are connected and assembled in operative relation to one of the blocks A and 3 denotes a rail of the intersecting track also connected to the block A through the medium of the binding irons 2 which have their ends secured to the track rails as fully shown.
The groove 7 is wider at the base and forms a way for the sliding member a, a, which member has its upper surface on the plane of the upper surface of the block A. The sliding member a, a, is also provided with two grooves 0, 0, extending diagonally across the said member and intersecting it at one side. One of the grooves c, c, is adapted to aline with a groove 1), Z), of the block A, whereas the other groove 0 is designed to aline with the groove 6, b, whereas the ends of the sliding member are designed to aline with the tread surface of the block A in order that the wheels of a car may pass from one rail over the tread surface of the next succeeding section of the rail without encountering any spaces which will cause the car wheels to knock or jar the roadbed when passing thereover. For instance, when the sliding member a, a, is set to the position shown in Fig. 1, the groove 0, is in alinement with the grooves b, b, of the block A, and the outer end of each sliding member is in alinement wth the tread surface of the block A and in alinement with those rails which extend longitudinally of the sheet of drawings, whereas in Fig. 2 in which the parts are set in a different position, the groove 0 in the sliding member a is in alinement with the groove 6, b and the end of the sliding member opposite that heretofore referred to forms a continuation of the rails or tread surface transversely of the sheet of drawings. As each of the intersecting rails is provided with elements similar to those heretofore described, a description of one of these members will suffice as a description of the construction and operation of the parts at the other corners of the crossing and a description of the means for operating the sliding member simultaneously will therefore be undertaken.
Referring to Fig. 4, the intersecting grooves 0, c, of the sliding member a, a, are very well shown and as the sliding member is also illustrated in operative relation to the block, the manner of forming a continuous groove or channel through said blocks for the purpose of accommodating flanges of wheels will, it is thought, be apparent.
Each sliding member is provided with a link n pivoted to a lever D, and the lever D, in turn, is pivoted on a bracket D and has its end connected to the head 0 on the thrust rod D which thrust rod extends through a collar or bearing D Each thrust rod D is connected by a link j to a cross arm J on the shaft 9, the said shaft being journaled in bearings 7L, h, which are suitably stationed with respect to the crossing. A weight X isattached to the arm y, which arm is on the shaft 9 and is utilized for the purpose of partially rotating the shaft g. That is to say, when the arm is in the position shown in Fig. 1 and the said arm is thrust to the position shown in Fig. 2, the shaft will be given a partial turn and communicate. motion to the sliding track through the interposed elements heretofore described, resulting in shifting the position of the said sliding members and carrying the grooves of said sliding members into position with respect to the grooves of the blocks.
The manner of shifting the sliding members to the position shown in Fig. 1 would be a reversal of operation to that heretofore described, being of course accomplished by swinging the arm 3 from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 1.
We claim 1. I11 a railway crossing, grooved tread blocks connecting the rails thereof, the grooves of said tread blocks arranged on a line with the flange side of the tread portions of oppositely disposed rails, said tread blocks also provided with guide-ways, movable members positioned in said guideways, said movable members provided with grooves adapted to register with the grooves in said tread blocks, and means for shifting said movable members to register the grooves therein with the grooves in said line with the flange side of the tread portions of oppositely disposed rails, said tread blocks also provided with slots diagonally disposed with relation to said grooves, movtread blocks, and means for shifting said movable members to register the slots therein with the grooves in said tread blocks.

In a railway crossing, grooved tread blocks connecting the rails thereof, the grooves of said tread blocks arranged on a line with the flange side of the tread portions of oppositely disposed rails, said tread blocks also provided with slots diagonally disposed with relation to said grooves, said slots provided with undercut portions, movable members provided with lugs extending into said undercut portions positioned in said slots, the tops of said movable members being flush with the top of the tread portions of said blocks, said movable members provided with grooves adapted to alternately register with the grooves in said tread blocks, and means for moving said movable members to register the grooves therein with the grooves in said tread blocks.

In a railway crossing, tread blocks connecting the rails thereof, said tread blocks provided with flange receiving grooves, said grooves of each tread block intersecting, said tread blocks also provided with slots diagonally disposed with relation to said flange receiving grooves, movable members positioned in said slots, said movable members provided with intersecting grooves adapted to register with the intersecting grooves in said tread blocks, and means for shifting said movable members to alternately register the grooves therein with the grooves in said tread blocks.

In a railway crossing, grooved tread blocks, connecting the rails thereof, the grooves of each tread block intersecting, said grooved tread blocks also provided with slots diagonally arranged with respect to said grooves and intersecting them, movable members positioned in said slots, said movable members provided with grooves adapted to register with the grooves in said tread blocks, and means for moving said movable members to register the grooves therein with the grooves in said tread blocks.
6. In a railway crossing, grooved tread blocks connecting the rails thereof, the grooves of each tread block intersecting, said tread blocks also provided with slots intersecting said grooves, movable members positioned in said slots, said movable members provided with grooves extending in the same direction as the grooves in said tread blocks, and means for moving said movable members to register one or the other of the grooves therein with one or the other of said grooves in said tread blocks.
7. In a railway crossing, grooved tread blocks connecting the rails thereof, the grooves of each tread block intersecting,
said grooves arranged on a line with the inside of the tread portions of oppositely disposed rails, guide-ways diagonally disposed with relation to said grooves, movable members positioned in said guide-ways, said movable members provided with grooves adapted to alternately register with opposite grooves in said tread blocks, and means for shifting said movable members to register the grooves therein with the grooves in said tread blocks.
8. In a railway crossing, grooved tread blocks, connecting the rails thereof, the grooves of each tread block intersecting, a diagonally arranged slot intersecting said grooves at their point of intersection, a movable member positioned in said slot and having its upper surface on a plane substantially common with that of the tread portion of said block, said movable member provided with grooves corresponding to the grooves in said tread block, and means for shifting said movable member to register one or another of the grooves therein with one or another of the grooves in said tread block.
9. In a railway crossing, grooved tread blocks connecting the rails thereof, said tread blocks provided with guide-ways disposed diagonally with relation to the grooves in said tread blocks, movable members positioned in said guide-ways, said movable members provided with grooves, said grooves being adapted to be alternately alined with opposite grooves in said blocks, and beveled ends carried by said movable members, said beveled ends being adapted to aline with the tread portions of oppositely disposed rails of said crossing.
10. In a railway crossing, blocks comprising convergently disposed intersecting rail tread portions, said blocks having intersecting flange receiving grooves for said intersecting rail tread portions, said blocks also provided with slots diagonally arranged with respect to and intersecting said convergently disposed rail tread portions and flange receiving grooves, movable members positioned in said diagonally arranged slots and having their tops substantially flush with the rail tread portions of said blocks, said movable members intermediate their ends being provided with convergently disposed grooves having a direction common with that of the convergently disposed flange receiving grooves in said blocks, one of said convergently disposed grooves in each of said movable members being normally in register with its corresponding flange receiving groove in each of said blocks'with the contiguous end portion of said movable member in that part of the slot intersecting the rail tread portion with which said flange receiving groove cooperates, and means to reciprocate said movable members to bring the other of said convergently disposed grooves of each of said movable members into register with its corresponding flange receiving groove in each of said blocks whereby the end portion eontiguous the last mentioned convergently disposed groove of said movable member occupies that part of the slot intersecting the rail tread portion with which said last mentioned flange receiving groove cooperates and hence a continuous rail tread portion or open track through the crossing will be presented in the direction in which the flange receiving grooves of said blocks and the grooves of said movable members register.

In a railway crossing, grooved tread blocks connecting the rails thereof, said grooves arranged on a line with the flange side of the tread portions of oppositely disposed rails, said tread blocks also provided with guide ways, movable members positioned in said guide ways, said movable members provided with spaced grooves adapted to alternately register with the grooves in said tread blocks, levers connected to said movable members, and means for oscillating said levers.
12. In a railway crossing, grooved tread blocks connecting the rails thereof, the grooves of said tread blocks arranged on a line with theflange side of the tread portions of oppositely disposed rails, said tread blocks also provided with guide-ways, movable members positioned in said guide-ways, said movable members provided with spaced grooves adapted to alternately register with opposite grooves in said tread blocks, links connected to said movable members, levers connected to said links, and means for oscillating said levers.
