UNITED STATES PATENT @IFFIQE.
SWITCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 15, 1907.
Application filed April 21, 1906. Serial No. 313,069.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. NUGENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, in the county of Kanawha and State of Test Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Switches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to switches, and more particularly to switch-operating de vices, the object being to provide a very novel device which can be readily attached to the ordinary switch now in use.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device which is very simple and cheap in construction and one which is very effective in use, as the switch can be operated from the engine.
Another object of my invention is to provide a very simple tripping device which is adapted to be connected to the engine, so that the switch can be operated as desired by the engineer.
I/Vith these objects in view the invention consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of the track and siding, showing my improved switch-operating device in place. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view. Fig. 4: is a section taken through the track, showing the tripping-rod in engagement with one of the opcrating-arms. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the tripping device.
In the drawings, A indicates the main track, and B the side track, which are connected together by the ordinary switch 0. The points 0 of the switch are connected to the bar D, carried by a crank E, formed on the lower end of the vertical shaft E, mounted in a plate F, secured between the ties. A pulley F is mounted on the upper end of the shaft E, so that the switch can be operated in the ordinary way, if desired.
A disk G, provided with a central square opening, is mounted on the square portion of the shaft E, provided with spaced openings in which the ends of the rods H, I, J, and K are pivotally connected, provided with bifurcated ends II, I, J, and K, in which the crank-arms of the shafts II I J 2 K are secured, which are mounted in bearings H I J and K arranged between the ties of the track. The shafts H I are provided with arms H I at their ends, arranged between the main track and the shafts J 2 K extending over into the side track B, having arms J K at their ends and arms J 5 K intermediate their ends between the main track for the purpose hereinafter fully described.
In Fig. 5 I have shown my improved tripping device, which is .adapted to be carried by the pilot of the engine, and consists of a crank-arm L, mounted on a shaft L, pro- -Vided with a bifurcated lower end L, the
walls of said bifurcation being slotted, in which the pin M of the bar M is adapted to work. The bar is adapted to be supported in guidebrackets N between the rails and is provided with downwardly-projecting ends M adapted to engage the arm of the shafts H I J and K The other end of the crank-arm L is secured in the bifurcated end of the rod 0, which is connected to a lever 0, provided with a hand-grip mounted in a frame P of a plate I, which is adapted to be secured in the cab of the engine and is provided with a segmental rack P adapted to be engaged by the lever, so as to lock the arm in any position desired.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have provided a switchoperating device which can be operated from the engine, so as to cause the engine to follow the main track or side track or so that the engine can return from the side track, as by throwing the bar M of the tripping device into engagement with the arms of the shafts the points will be opened and closed, as desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the kind described, the combination with switch-points carrying a rod, of a crank-shaft connected to said rod, a plate fixed on said shaft, and shafts connected to said plate provided with arms, for the purpose described.
2. In a device of the kind described, the combination with switch-points connected together by a rod, a crank-shaft connected to said rod, a disk fixed on said shaft, rods connected to said disk and crank-shafts connected to said rods provided with arms for the purpose described.
3. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a switch, of a rod carried by the points of said switch, a crank-arm connected to said rod, carried by a shaft, a
disk mounted on the shaft, rods connected to said disk, shafts provided with arms connected to said rods and means carried by the en gine for engaging said arms, for the purpose described.
41. In a device of the kind described, the combination with switch-points carrying a rod, of a shaft provided with a crank connected to said rod, a disk mounted on said shaft, shafts mounted between the tracks provided with arms at each end, rods connecting said arms to said disk, and tripping means carried by the engine, for the purpose described.
5. In a device of the kind described, the combination with switch-points carrying a rod, of crank-shafts mounted between the ties to each side of said points, arms projectcombination with switch-points, of a crankshaft connected to said points provided with a disk, crank-shafts provided with arms mounted to each side of said points, rods one side of said points, rods connecting said shafts to said disk, crank-shaft mounted between the rails and siding provided with up wardly-projecting arms, rods connecting said shafts to said disk, and tripping means carried by the engine adapted to engage said arms, for the purpose described.
