TRAIN-ORDER HOLDER.
noeasee.
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 23, 1913.
Application filed March 17, 1913. Serial No. 754,839.
To all whom t may cono-cra.'
Be it known that I, JEROME BARLow, a citizen of the United. States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Train-0rder Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for holding` orders for enginemen, motormen, and the like, and the object of this improvement is to provide a simple and effective device adapted to expose a plurality of train orders at. one time in a conspicuous place in the operators room and to permit such holder to easily removed for the insertion of new orders.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. Y
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device embodying my invention, Eig. 2 is a section of the same taken on line 2 2 in F ig. 1, Fig. 3 is a similar view taken on line 3-3 in Fig. 1, Fig. l is a fragmental section taken on line i-t in Fig. 1, and F ig. is a fragmental section taken on line 5 5 in Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a base 6 which is adapted to be rigidly secured to the cab or compartment of an engineman, motor-man and the like by means of screws 7 or their equivalents. Along the bottom, or at any other preferred positions are provided a plurality of hooks 9 adapted to receive the orders after having been used and removed from the display device.
At the top of the base 6 is a refiector 10 adapted to direct light from an electric bulb 11, or any other suitable source of light to the base of the displaying mechanism. Reflector 10 and lamp 11 are fixed permanently to the base 6.
Orders given to enginemen, motormen, and the like are ordinarily divided into two classes and given suitable numbers, such as orders 81 and orders 19. The base 6 is provided of a suHicient size to accommodate a number of orders at one time and divided at its central portion by a rib 12 so that the operator may know at a glance which order he is looking at. The rib 12 is provided with dowel pins 13 along its sides and portable bases 11i provided with recesses adapted to engage said dowel pins 13 to removably secure them on the base 6. A spring catch 15 is provided on the base 6 and engages the top of said portable base 1Llto lock it in position on the base 6. The two portable bases 14 are similar in form and construction and adapted to fit the two sides of the base 6.
Hingedly secured by hinges 1S to the portable bases lil are skeleton frames 16 having openings 1T in their faces adapted to expose the train orders held in position on the portable bases 14. The skeleton frames 16 are locked on the portable bases 14k by means of resilient catches 19.
The portable bases 1li are provided with order holding pins 20 and 21 adapted to engage perforations in the train orders 22 to support them under the skeleton frames 16. The supporting pins 20 being of larger and different shape from the pins 21 to prevent the wrong orders being placed on them. In the arrangement shown the larger pins 2O are placed near the rib 12 so that corresponding perforations in the train orders 22 could not be placed, when in displaying position, on the wrong sides of the rib 12. In this manner the orders could not be misplaced.
The portable bases 14 and skeleton frames 16 are unlocked from the base 6 and carried to the place where orders are given and the proper orders placed in these frames by proper' employees and given to the enginemen, motor-men, or the like, who after reading the order takes it to the base 6 and locks it in position thereon. The orders are then displayed before him so that he can see them when he desires. Such orders are now written or printed on tissue papers and after reading the engineman, motorman or the like simply crumples them up and places them in his pocket. This is designed to keep the order before him for reference until killed by a new order.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but
desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A device of the kind described comprising a base; card supports carried by said base; certain of said card supports being of different sizes and shapes from others; cards having perforations fitting said card supports and supported thereby; and a card retaining frame maintaining said cards on said card supports; substantially as described.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a base; two sets of card supports carried by said base, certain of said card supports being of different sizes and shapes from others; two sets of cards having perforations tting said card supports and supported thereby, each set of cards having their perforations arranged to engage one set of said card supports and to prevent engagement with the other set of said supports when in exposed condition; and a card retaining frame maintaining said cards on said card supports7 substantially as described.
3. A device of the kind described comprising a base; a rib on said base dividing said base into tivo portions; card supports on each portion of said base, certain of said card supports being of different sizes and shapes from others; cards having perforations shaped to fit said card supports and supported thereby, said card supports and perforations being disposed to prevent cards adapted for use on one portion of said base from being exposed on the other portion of said base; and a card retaining frame maintaining said cards on said card supports, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I havesigned my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
