. INVENTOR, Iedevrid( M Green ATTORNEY W1 TNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT EIDE.
FREDERICK M. GREEN, OF BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA,
T0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FREDERICK M. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new aud useful Improvements in Sash-IVeghts, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in sash weights, and the object of the invention is to provide a novel construction by which sash weights may be made at the lowest possible cost and still be of the necessary compa-ctness and durability.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side view of my improved sash weight; Fig. 2 is a broken longitudinal section thereof on an enlarged scale; Fig. 3 is a trans verse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In nearly all iron works, and many similar places, there are piles of scrap or refuse iron, consisting of short lengths of rods, bars, bolts and the like, of which oftentimes no use can be made, since to remelt them requires an amount of fuel and a furnace the expense of which is out of proportion to the gain effected thereby. I have conceived the idea of utilizing such scrap iron for sash weights. For
Specication of Letters Patent.

this purpose I form a fagot of the bars or rods.
The thickness of the fagot should be as great as possible without allowing any part thereof to extend from the circumference of the sash weight, when completed; that is, the" concrete must entirely surround the fagot, so as to protect the same from atmospheric moisture, and provide it with a smooth surface to move easily in the sash guide.
Referring to the drawing, l indicates short rods, bars, and the like, bound together by wire ties 2 to form a fagot, one of said bars being bent to form a loop I for suspending the sash weight. 3 indicates the concrete entirely surrounding the fagot.
I claim A sash weight consisting of pieces of iron, ties binding said pieces together to form a fagot, and concrete surrounding the same.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK M. GREEN.
