BED-WARMER.

Be it known that 1, JOHN F. PETIT, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Georgetown, in the county of Vermilion and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Warmersg and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in bed warmers.
One object of the invention is to provide a bed warmer adapted to be supported beneath the mattress or bottom of a bed and which will evenly distribute the heat to all parts of the bed.
Another object is to provide a bed warmer adapted to receive any kind of heat or to which may be applied any suitable heat producing apparatus.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.

My improved bed warmer comprises a flat rectangular hollow body 1 formed of sheet metal and having its bottom, sides and ends constructed of double walls between which is arranged a packing 2 of asbestos or other suitable material. The top 3 of the warmer is of single thickness and from said top the heat radiates and passes upwardly against the spring bottom or mattress of the bed whereby the latter is thoroughly and uniformly heated over its entire surface.
The body 1 is substantially the same size and shape as the bottom of the bed to which the warmer is applied and the warmer is secured to the bed-stead and supported bcneath the bottom thereof by any suitable means.
Arranged in the body of the warmer and extending from one end to a point near the opposite end thereof and from one side to the other is a baille or heat deflecting plate 8 by means of which the heat passing through the body of the warmer is directed from one end thereof to the o pposite end and bach as clearly indicated by arrows in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The plate 8 is supported in an inclined position by transverse supporting bars 9 the ends of which are bent downwardly to form supporting lugs 1.0 of suitable length for supporting the battle plate at the desired inclination as clearly shown in Figs. l and 2 of the drawing. Arranged on the plate 8 at the lower or foot end of the warmer is a sheet of asbestos 8n the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
The construction and arrangement of the flat heat detlecting plate S constitutes the most essential feature of the invention for the reason that the heat is gradually expanded until it reaches the free elevated end of said plate, the heat at this point being contacted by the end member of the hollow body and the contracted entrances of the upper passage after which the heat is again expanded along the entire upper surface or wall of said body.
By contracting the heat and gradually expanding the same in the manner described, the hollow body 1 is retained at an even temperature throughout its entire structure.
In the lower side of the foot eind of the warmer and in one corner of said end is arranged a heat receiving opening 11 which is surrounded by a depending flange 1 2v projecting a suitable distance below the bottom of the warmer as shown. Any suitable heat producing apparatus may be applied to the flanged opening 11 for supplyingthe heat for the warmer, which is adapted to project into the space surrounded by the depending vflange 12 as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The front side of the flange 12 is hinged at its upper edge to form a door 12a which may be swung upwardly to permit a lamp to be placed beneath the opening 117 without being tilted.
In the foot end of the warmer at the opposite corner from the opening 11 is a draft opening 13 along the side edges of which are arranged guide flanges la with which is slidably engaged the edges of a damper plate 15. The plate 15 is adjusted between said cleats and over the opening 13 to regulate the size thereof, by means of an' operating rod 16 which extends through guides on the end of the warmer to the opposite side thereot1 and near the hinged side of the flange l2, whereby the damper plate may be readily adjusted from the side of the bed. By adjusting the damper plate 15 it will be seen that the passage of the heat through the warmer may be regulated and the temperature of the bed thus controlled.
From the forego-ing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A bed warmer comprising a hollow body having a heat supply opening, a flat cleflecting plate gradually inclined from the heat supply opening of the body and terminating adjacent to the opposite end wall of said body, forming a gradually expanding passage beneath the deflectng plate from the heat supply opening to the opposite end wall, and a gradually expanding passage above said deflecting plate from said opposite end wall to the heat supply end of the warmer, and means for supplying heat thereto, and means for regulating the latter.
