J'OHN H. STANTON, OF' FRANKLIN, OHIG.
Letters Patent No. 108,200 ,dated October 11, 1870.
IMPRovEMi-:N'T in cARPEr-FAsTENERs.
The Schedule :eferred to in these Letters Patent'and making part of the same.
I'o all whmn t may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. STANTON, of Franklin, in the county oi' Warren and in the State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Molding for Securing .Garpets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact deseription thereof', -which will enable others skilled'in the art to make and use 'the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing 4forming part ot' this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a detail sectional view illustrating my invention.
Figure 2 is a detail topriew ofa corner oi' the earpet as attached to the door.
v Similar letters of reference 'indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish au improved means for putting down a carpet evenly and holding it securely, and which shall be simple in coustruction and quickly applied; and
It consists in the molding, provided with hooks, to receive the edges of the carpet, as hereinafter more fully described. I f
A represents the molding, the ends of which, at the corners of the room, are beveled of?, as shown in iig. 2.,
B are hooks or points attached to the lower side of the molding A, uponwhich the edges of the carpet are hooked or caught, as shown in fig. l, so that when the said molding is pressed out to the side walls of the room the carpet will be stretched evenly. The moldings are secured to the door, holding the carpet in place by screws O passing through the molding and screwed into the door of the room.
In case a-washboard is used the molding may be recessed or rabbeted upon its outer side, as shown in figs. 1 and 2. It' desired, or in caseof light carpets, the hooks or catches B may be attached to the rabbeted rea-r side of the molding A, as shown iu iigs. 1 and 2, to receive the edges ofthe carpet.
In putting down a carpet with the molding A, it is impossible to stretch the carpet a piece at a time, as is done when the carpet is secured with tacks.V This renders it necessary to use a stretcher in putting down the carpet.
D is the head of the` stretcher, which is placed against the edge of the molding A. To the head D is pivoter! an arm, E, 'so that it mayv have a free lateral movement. '.lo the end of the arm E is adj osta bly pivoted abar, F, so that the stretcher may be extended or contracted, as circumstances may require.
v'In eases where the carpet has to be taken up and put down often, the screws C may be made with T- heads, to pass through slots in the moldings, so that a quarterV turn will bring the T-heads of the screws in line with the said slots, allowing the moldings to be lifted off, leaving the screws in place in the door, ready to receive the moldings when the carpet is again put down, a quarter of a turn of the screws bringing the T-h eads ofthe screws across the said slots, securing the moldings in place.
Haring thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The moldings A and hooks B, for securing a carpet to the door, said moldings being constructed and ap' plied substantially as herein shown and described.
l JOHN H. STANTON. Witnesses:
