CLAUDE HERBERT BRIGHT, JR., OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
PRINTING-PRESS.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CLAUDE I-I. BRIGHT, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a printing press and more particularly to the class of impression taking devices for proving the accu 'acy 'for the transfer of figures or items from one book, such as a cash book, to another, such as a ledger.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an impression taking device wherein any errors or inaccuracies occurring in the transfer of figures from one book to the other may be readily and conveniently detected.
Another object of the invention is the provision oi an impression taking device in which a paper, cloth or other web of absorbent character' will pass across a resilient bed from one side to the opposite side in such a manner as to cause the impressions so taken to appear in columnar order on the impression web.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an impression taking device in which a marker for receiving lead, crayon or writing Afluid is arranged for the placing of a mark at a determined distance 'from the writing of which impression is 'taken so as to indicate that such an impression has been made from the entry sheet, or from a card having an entry thereon.
A still turther object of the invention is the provision of an impression taking device in which the impressionable material is revolubly mounted on spindles, one of which is designed to move in one direction so that the impression web will travel in one direc` tion Yfor the purpose of causing impressions to appear in columnar order thereon.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device oli this character wherein the bed is of a resilient character to assure a clear impression to be made from a sheet, card or the like without causing the blurring of the impression when taken.

lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter :t'ully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings` :wliigure lV is a front elevation oit a device constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is an end elevation. `Fig. 4l is a similar view, looking toward the opposite end. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5 5 oi Fig. 2. Fig. is a sectional view on the, line (3 6 oi' F 2.
Similar re'lercnre characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, the device comprises a portable base plate 10 `which is preferably oiE rectangular shape and is cut into :from one longitudinal edge thereof: to provide an aperture ill which opens through the said longitudinal edge of the plate near one end thereof, while iorn'ied on the under tace ot' the plate at one side ot the aperture are resilient Vflanges 1Q in which received the opposed edges ot a layer 13 o'l`: suitable anti-slipping material such as blotting paper, so that the major portion ot the under face of the base plate will be covered to avoid the mai-ring oriotherwise damaging oi? the leaves o t an entry book, card or the like when the device is in use.
integrally 'formed with the base plate and rising t'rom the upper 'tace thcreo't at one side ot the aperture ill. therein is a boss let provided with a threaded socket 'l5 in which is received a detachable binding screw 16, the same being passed through an ear 'i7 'formed on a pintle sleeve 18 receiving a pintle 19 swingingly connecting the handle 20 thereto, it being apparent that by loosening the screw 1G the handle 20 can be adjusted lor the convenience oit the operator of the device.
integrally :formed with the base plate l0 at the rear or ri-n'iaining longitudinal edge of the same is a bracket- Ql in which is journaled the stud bearing Q0 ol a swinging iin- ]n-esf-ion carriage emnprising an L-shaped 'train-e or arm 9? oxtemled over and above the base plate 'l0 in alincment with the aperture Ill therein, the :tree limb oit the trame or arm 2B being formed with depending members 24 supporting an impression plate 25 provided with a resilient bed 26 which may be constructed in any desirable manner, the plate 25 with its bed 26 being designed to work in the aperture ll in the base plate 10. The stud bearing 22 has coiled about the saine a spring 27, one end of which is connected thereto and the opposite end connected to the bracket 2l, the spring being designed to normally elevate the frame or arm 23 to hold the impression plate 25 and its bed 26 out of the aperture ll in the base plate.
Integrally formed with the frame or arm 23 are spool supports or spindles 2S on which are revolubly mounted spools 29 and 30 respectively. Carried by the spools 8O is a web 3l of impressionable material, and this web at its outer end is adapted to be connected to the spool 29 for the winding of the same thereon from the spools 30, the said web 3l being trained beneath the resilient bed 25 of the impressio-n plate 25 so that it will be exposed above the aperture l1 to be brought into contact with an underlying surface when the carriage has been lowered or depressed for the taking of an impression of an entry on to the web. The spool 29 is provided with an annular series of ratchet teeth 82 at one end thereof which are adapted to be engaged by the rack teeth 33 of a resilient dog Se mounted upon and rising from the base slate l0 so that on the raising of the carriage by the spring 2'? the ratchet teeth 32 will be acted upon by the teeth 33 of the dog to shift the web by the unwinding thereof from the spool 80 to the spool 29 a predetermined distance, whereby a new portion of the web will be exposed for use when the successive impressions have been taken.
Carried by the frame or arm 23 of the carriage is a resilient pawl 35 which engages the ratchet teeth 32 for checking the turning of the spool 29 when the carriage is being lowered and also to sustain the web at its portion exposed above the aperture taut.
rllhe proving web 3l is made of paper, cloth or other suitable material sensitized, chemically treated, or made of an absorbent nature so as to receive impressions of written or printed items upon a surface.
ln the use of the device it may be assumed that the web 3l is made of a comparatively thin body of paper or other absorbent material capable like a blotter of taking up ink so that it may be used for the dual purpose of blotting the ligure entries made upon the pages of a ledger, card or the like and to be impressed thereby so as to show such entries with the figures of the entries in proper order therethrough. The device is shifted on to the sheet card or the like by an operator gripping the handle 20 with the left hand so as to place the base plate 10 over` the sheet, card or the like,
whereby the entry or entries appearing thereon will be exposed through the aperture ll. N ow the operator with the right hand engages or grips the carriage through the medium of the hand grip 36 provided thereon, and on depressing the said carriage the exposed portion of the web 3l above the aperture 'll will be brought into contact with the written matter upon the sheetor the like for the blotting thereof and receiving the impression therefrom.
0n the impression plate at one end edge thereof is swingingly mounted a marking device comprising a pencil or pen holder 37 in which is inserted a piece of lead, crayon or the like 38, the holder being acted upon by means of a coiled spring 89 which serves to bring the point of the lead, crayon or the like into contact with the surface containing the entry on the lowering of the carriage for marking the said surface a determined distance from the writing thereon, and in this manner indicating that the impression has once been taken from said entry or writing.
ln practice, assuming that the bookkeeper or accountant is making a transfer of items from one entry book, card or the like to another, and when this is being done the de- `vice is successively rested upon the page or pages on which the transfer of the entries has been made, and as each item is entered and while the ink is still wet the exposed surface of the web 31 is brought into proper position and the carriage depressed, whereby the impression web is brought into contact with the still moist entry and takes up the ink therefrom, by which a duplicate entry is made thereon so as to show therethrough, and in this manner such entries will appear in regular columnar order on the impression web. lt will therefore be readily understood that the impression web will show in a single column an eXact duplicate of the various entries made at different points on the page, card or the like, so that upon adding up this column of figures and that contained in the original entry, book or the like any discrepancy that may exist between the totals found will show that an error in transferring or posting the figures from one book, card or the like to another will be apparent so that the error may be corrected without the expenditure of any material amount of time or labor.
'Vhile l have in the present instance illustrated the use of one form of device in transferring items from a cash book, card or the like to another it will of course be understood that the invention is not limited thereby, because various changes and modifications may be made therein or the Same may be employed in proving figures or matter of any kind copied from one book, card or the like to another.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is l. A printing machine comprising a base plate having an aperture therein, a swinging carriage connected to the base plate and having an impression plate, a resilient bed supported by the impression plate, and means for supporting an impression web and moving the same over the resilient bed from one side thereof to the other whereby the said web will be exposed through the aperture in the base plate.
