Description

G. ADAMS.
COMBINED JACK AND THILL SUPPORT.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 1, 1912.
, 1,081,008. Patented Dec.9,1913.
Inventor Attorneys GEORGE ADAMS, 0F FRANKLIN CENTRE, QUEBEC, CANADA.
COMBINED JACK AND TI-IILLSUPPORT;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dem-9,1913.
Application filed July 1, 1912. Serial No. 707,079;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE ADAMS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Franklin Centre, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Jacks and Thill-Supports; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention to be hereinafter described relates to a combined vehicle jack and thill support.
In order to more clearly disclose the con struction, operation, and use of the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of the present application.
Throughout the several figures of the drawings like reference characters designate the same parts.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a vehicle, showing the invention in use both as a jack and as a thill support; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the invention; Fig. 3 is a side elevation; Fig. 41 is a top plan view of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3, but on the opposite side.
The main objects of the invention are to provide a simple, eflicient, durable, economical, and compact combination ack and thill support which may be readily manufactured in large quantities and at a moderate cost, and one which may be readily and conveniently carried.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates the reach, 6 the axles, and 7 the thills of a vehicle gear.
The jack consists of a post 8 slightly beveled at the foot 9 so as to stand in an inclined position. Slidably mounted on the post is a carrier 10, having fingers 11 which embrace the post and hold the carrier thereon. One edge of the carrier is provided with teeth 12, while the opposite edge against which the head or block 13 abuts is plain. The top 1 1 of the head lies parallel with the foot 9 and therefore is at an obtuse angle to the carrier. The head is held to the carrier by a U-shaped strap 15 of suitable length, pivoted at its extremities to the head, passing around the carrier, and engaging one or other of the teeth 12.
A lever 16 is pivoted to the top of the post at 17 and is provided with a toe 18, connected to the top of the carrier by one or more pivoted links 19. The angle between the lever and its toe is such that when the lever is drawn down to position shown, to raise the head, as shown in dotted lines, the link will pass over the pivot 17 and thus prevent the jack from running down. The inclination of the post allows the weight on the head to be centered over the foot of the post.
hen the vehicle is not in use, the jack may be used to support the thills 7, the free end of the lever being suitably formed to engage the cross bar of the thills or the tongue, if the vehicle is of the two horse type. For this purpose, the post is provided near the foot with a hook 20 which may be engaged on the reach 5 of the vehicle while the upper end of the post rests on the front axle and projects forwardly, the head 13 pre venting rearward motion. The lever 16 is moved to a substantially vertical position and the free end, which is suitably shaped forming a concavity at 21, inserted under the cross bar of the thills so as to support the same in elevated position. If desired, the attachment may be made to the body of the vehicle, instead of to the running gear. When the vehicle is in use the jack may be conveniently carried by suspending the same from the reach or body.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device adapted to be used at will as a wagon ack or thill support, the combination of a lever having a concavity in its outer end with apost to which it is pivoted and which is arranged to bear upon the ground when used for jacking up the wagon, means connected to and operated by said lever and movable on said post for that pur pose and means attached to said post for engaging the wagon gearing when said post is approximately in a horizontal position, the said lever being adapted to be turned up when the post is in this latter posit-ion, to fit its concave end under and against the cross bar of the thills, thereby supporting the same.
2. In a device adapted to be used at will as a wagon jack or thill support, the combination of a lever having a concavity in its outer end with a post to which it is pivoted, In Witness whereof I have hereunto set means attached to said post for engaging my hand in the presence of two Witnesses. the wa on earing a carrier lonwitudinally movabi on said pdst and connected to said GEORGE ADAMS lever to be moved thereby and a block ad- Witnesses: justably mounted on said carrier substan- S.
