WHEEL ATTACHMENT FOR HARROWS.
naaoaes.
Application fi'ledNovember 29, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ART AHRnNHoL'rz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Defiance, in the county of Shelby, State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Wheel Attachment for Harrows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to the art of farm ing implements, particularly disk harrows, and more especially to an improved wheel attachment, for supporting the disks and the frame of the harrow in an elevated position.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a wheel attachment of this kind comprising improved features of construction.
One of the features of construction is the provision of a two part bearing mounted upon the shaft or the axle of the harrow disk, and provided with a. pair of spaced arms, between which a standard (which carries a supporting wheel) is pivoted, there being a hook lever adjustably pivoted to said standard and designed to engage the frame of a harrow, for holding the standard in a vertical position, to support the disk harrow raised.
Another feature of the invention is the provision of a chain to support the standard in a horizontal position.
In practical fields, the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in rear elevation of a disk harrow, showing the improved wheel attachment applied thereto and constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the disk harrow and the wheel attachment applied, showing the same in dotted lines, as thrown out of engagement with the ground.
Fig. 3 illustrates detail perspective views of the two part bearing disassembled.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates the frame of a disk harrow having the downwardly extending arms 2, which terminate in bearings 3 for the reception of the axle or shaft 4, on which the harrow disk 5 rotates. A pair of bear- Specification of Letters Patent.

ings 6 is mounted upon the shaft 4, one adjacent each end thereof. Each bearing consists of two parts, one in the form of a staple 7, the other in the form of an arched clamping plate 8, which is substantially semi-circular in cross section, and is provided with apertured ears 9, for the reception of the arms of the staple 7 (which arches the axle) there being nuts 7 threaded to the arms of the staple to hold the plate 8 clamped in place. The clamping plate 8 of each bearing is provided with laterally extending spaced arms 14, which are curved slightly upwardly and have perforations at their extremities, for the reception of the bolt 16. A supporting lever or standard 17 is pivotally mounted upon the bolt l6 between the two arms 14. A plate 18 has its upper end secured by bolts 19 to the outer face of the lever or standard 17 and has its lower end terminating correspondingly with the lower end of the lever 17. A bolt 20 extends through the lower ends of the lever 17 and the plate 19, and carries a supporting wheel 21. It is to be noted that the lower ends of said lever and the plate 18 are curved forwardly, so that the bolt 20 is substantially directly below the axle or shaft 4, preferably a trifle in advance of said axle, as shown in Fig. 2 clearly. Pivoted upon a bolt 22 in the upper end of the standard is a lever 23, which is provided with a hook 24. This bolt 22 may extend through any one of the apertures 25 of said'lever 23, in
order to hold the lever in different adjusted positions. When the standard is disposed in vertical position or substantially so, or according to the adjustment of the bolt 22, the hook 24 of the lever'23 is designed to engage the frame of the disk harrow, in order to hold the standard in its position. This frame 26 of the disk harrow has a hook 27, which may be engaged by any one of the links of the chain 28, one end of which is provided with a hook 29, to engage an eye 30 on one side of the standard, to support the standard in the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2, whereby the harrow disks may engage the ground.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful, is
In a device as set forth, the combination of a frame and an axle or shaft mounted in bearings thereof provided with harrow disks, of a bearing on said shaft or axle, a lever pivotally mounted on said bearing and having a supporting wheel at its lower end, the lower end of said lever being curved forwardly and under said axle or shaft, a second lever disposed substantially horizontally under said frame and having 'a hook at one end engaging said frame, means for adjustably connecting the first lever to the second lever, whereby the first lever may be held in different adjusted positions to support said disks of the harrow off the ground, and means consisting of a chain connected to the first lever and adapted to be detachably Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the fGommissibner of Patents,
connected to said frame to support the said first lever in a horizontal position with the wheel off the ground, when the second 15 ART AHRENHOLTZ.
