application, and represent, iii-.-
Figure l, a view in side elevation of a mushroom bullet constructed in accordance with my invention, a portion of the jacket Ybeing broken away exposing a portion of the core in sect-ion. Fig. 2, a corresponding view of one of the `modified forms which my invention may assume.
My invention relates to an improvement in full-j acketed, sharp-nosed mushroom bul'- lets in which a relatively hard sheet-metal jacket is swagedupon and entirely lled by a soft metal core, the object being to produce `at a 'low cost for manufacture a lsuperior bullet of the character described.
Vith these ends in View, my invention consists in a mushroom bullet having certainV details of construction as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In carrying outmy invention, the rela tively hard one-piece sheet-metal jacket closed at its forward end, is virtually divided into a tip, 2, and a body, 3, by the formation in the exterior surface of the tip of a circumferential groove, 4, formed by cut-ting away and removing a portion of the metal of the jacket: without penetrating, however, to the core, 5, so that the bottom Copies of this patent may be obtained for Y Specification o1" Letters Patent.

Application filed September 13, 1913. Serial No. 789,604.
wall, 6, of the groove is .relied upon to hold the body and tlp of t-he jacket together. The jacket, however, is so weakened by the cutting of the groove, et, into it that it read'-.
ily breaks down along the line of the groove and permits the bullet to mushroom at the time of impact.
In the modified construction shown by Fig. 2, the jacket is virtually divided into a tip, 2, and a body, 3, by the formation in the jacket of a groove, 7, of triangular cross-section and formed by cutting a por tion of the meta-l of the jacket away without, however, cutting it through to the soft metal core, 5, the thin line of metal, 8, at the bottom of the groove, 7, serving to hold the parts 2 and 3 of the jacket together.` The groove 7, however, so weakens the jacket that it readily breaks down at the time of impact and permits the bullet to mushroom.
I claim: Y
A full jacketed, sharp-nosed mushroom bullet, comprising a one-piece sheet-metal jacket' closed at its front end, and a softmetal core, the jacket being virtually divided into a top-portion and a body-portion by the formation on the exterior surface of its tapering point of a circumferential cut groove the bottom wall of which serves to unitethe said tip and body portions of the jacket, whereby the jacket is weakened by the said groove so as to readily mushroom on impact. In testimony whereof, I have signed this speciication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS O. JOHNSON.
