To all whom it may concern." a
Be it known that l, litnun lliunoson, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at and useful Handle, is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved handle, and consists in providing a novel means of connection between the handle grip usually made of wood, and the metallic core the outer end of which may be of any suitable formation, but which in this particular instance is threaded whereby the handle may of which the following be secured to the thing to which the handle is to be connected by means of a nut.
The object of the invention is to. provide an'improved means of connection between metallic core which decreases materially the chance of splitting the former when the latter is inserted, and by Which an effective permanent connection between said, parts may be provided;
vlln the drawings:
Figure l is a longitudinal section of the assembled handle grip and the core, the
same being relatively enlarged.
lFig. 2 is a side elevation of the core. v ll ig. dis a cross section of the core on the line tar-a: of Fig, 2.
Fig. d is a side elevation of the core viewed from a plane at right angles to the plane of Fig. 2.
1 represents the main body of the handle grip which may be of any suitable design, and which is provided with a longitudinal bore extending partially through the same. 2 is the core in the form of a metallic bar of a diameter bore of the grip 1.. As will be seen, the core is of substantially the same diameter throughout, and is blunt at its inner end so be driven full depth into the bore, if desired, without danger of splitting. O n one side of the metallic core are a series of spurs 3--3 arranged in line and formed by cutting into the metal of the core obliquely, so as to give to each spur a lip formation, that is to say, ,a form in which the spur 1s of greater length than thickness,
adapted to snuglyfit in, the' spurs 4P4 may set or series is prefof wood will not be unnecessarilg is driven home erably arranged in individual spurs of the other set. The major portion of the surface of the core 2 is smooth, so that when the core is driven in, the surrounding wall cut ordey the arspurs shown, when the core it will be impossible to either twist the same within the grip or withdraw the same therefrom, since the pitch of each of the spurs is such as to prevent both rotary and longitudinal movement. lln the preferred form, the spurs are formed only on one side of the core 2, since if the core partalres of a partial turn as it is driven in, and as would be the tendency because of the spiral arrangement of the spurs, the said spurs will encounter only solid wood on said partial. turn, so that when the core is fully seated it will edectively resist the separation of the grip therefrom. llt will be understood of course that after the core is fully seated, the temporarily displaced wood of the surrounding wall will tend to swell and fill the spaces adjacent to the spurs. 5 represents the conventional ferrule which may be applied at the inner end of the handle l[ have found that a handle constructed formed. it is apparent that rangement of.
as above is of particular value in connection with electric switches, for instance, of the lrnife switchtype wherein the handle is connected to a cross bar by means of a nut. Although the handleconstruction has particular utility in connection with the switch ,it should be understood that l do not care to limit its use thereto.
What ll claim is: i
l. ][n a handle of the character described, a grip having a longitudinal bore therein and a core comprising a metallic bar of a diameter closely fitting saidbore and provided with a series of outstanding ribs having abrupt upper faces and sharpened outer lull rated outstanding ribs extending on. an inh ll tltl
lit
a core comprising a metallic bar of a let cline to the axis'of the core and a second series of longitudinally separated outstanding tie ribs extending on an incline to the axis of the core and in line with the inclined ribs of the first set to thereby constitute in efiect extensions of said first set of. inclined ribs. 5 3 In a handle of the character described, a grip havinga longitudinal bore therein and a core comprising a metallic bar of a diameter closely fitting said bore and provided on one side only thereof, with two series of longitudinally separated outstanding ribs inclined to the axis of the core and having curved sharpened outer cutting edges and abrupt upper faces for holding engagement in the material of the grip.
