JAPHET S. CUSSON, OF DE KALB, ILLINOIS.
HARNESS BACK-PAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 9, 1913.
Application filed December 5, 1912. Serial No. 735,100.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAPHET S. CUssoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at De Kalb, in the county of Dekalb and State of Tllinois, have invented a new and useful Harness Back-Pad, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to back pads used in connection with harnesses being placed in the middle of the horses back and the objects of my improvements are first, to make a pad which is flexible and will adjust itself to the animals back; second, to make a simple and novel fastening for the check hook; third, to make a novel fastening for the terrets; fourth, to make a back pad which can easily be repaired, and other features to become apparent from the description to follow.
Back pads as heretofore made have been very objectionable in that the pads were made inflexible and rigid in form and therefore often would not fit to the animals back and furthermore the construction of the metal parts were such that it required a considerable amount of labor and skill to repair the same. These objectionable features are eliminated by the use of my invention which comprises a flexible pad provided with metal parts which are made detachable.
To describe my invention so that others versed in the art to which it pertains can make and use the same I have illustrated it on the accompanying sheet of drawing forming a part of this specification in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved back pad, and Fig. 2 a central longitudinal section thereof.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout both views.
The pad in general comprises the upper part 3 which is preferably made of heavy leather and the under part 4 which is preferably made of graduated felt, the said upper part 3 and lower part 4 being secured together by stitching near the outer edge of the upper member as shown at 5.
The upper part 3 has four transverse slits 6 and a strap 7 is threaded through said slits arranged to have its center portion and ends exposed on top of the upper part 3, the extremities of the strap 7 being folded underneath the ends of the part 3 and secured by a rivet or otherwise as seen at 8 in Fig. 2, to provide means for securing the rings 9 to which the belly strap not shown is attached.
The check hook 10 is secured to the pad by having its fiat base portion clamped between the middle portion of the strap 7 and the part 3 with its post 11 extending through a perforation in the strap 7 thus it is clear that the check hook 10 can be removed or detached from the pad by bending the pad in a reverse from the normal position to afford suflicient slack in the strap 7 so that the post 11 of hook 10 can be withdrawn from underneath and out of the perforation in the strap 7.
The terrets 12 are secured to the pad by having their threaded shanks extending through perforations in the part 3 and screwed into the threaded perforations provided in the metal plates 13 which have their under sides curved to assist in giving the desired shape to the pad. It is clear that the terrets 12 can be removed or detached from the pad by simply screwing the same out.
t will be noted that the pad is flexible in the center and will conform to the shape of the animals back when placed in position; also that the check hook can be replaced by a new one in case of being broken.
The plates 13 are made of such size preferably rectangular in shape, that they are prevented from moving out of position when the terrets are removed by fitting closely between the part 3 the strap 7 and felt a, and the stitching 5. Should the threads in the plate 13 become defective a new plate can be substituted for the old one by severing a portion of the stitching 5 adjacent to the plate to enable the removal and insertion of the plates. The severed stitching being replaced by new after the new plate is in position.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Fatent of the United States is A harness back pad comprising a leather upper part provided with a plurality of slits therethrough, a leather strap threaded through said slits, a flexible pad to which the upper part is stitched, a terret-supporting block having a convex base and a sub stantially fiat upper surface interposed between said upper part and pad with the strap passing beneath and in contact with substantially the entire convex base of said block, a terret passing through the upper name to this specification in presence of part and secured in the block, and a checktwo subscribing witnesses this 29th day of rein hook having its base interposed between September, 1911, at De Kalb, Illinois.
said upper part and the strap and provided JAPHET S. CUSSON. with a post extending through an opening in Witnesses:
WILLIAM F. WILTHMYER,
the strap.
In testimony whereof I have signed my GEORGE I. TALBOT,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents Washington, D. G. V
