Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, Lewis C. Benissa citizen of the United States, and resident of Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and` useful Improvement in Iereussive Tools, of which the followingis a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a percussi ve tool having a novel form of rotation device, the operation of which is controlled by means independent of the operation of the work piston.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents in longitudinal central section, a percussive tool of the piston hammer type with my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a cross section taken in the plane of the line A- ot' Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a cross section taken in the plane of the line B-B of Fig. 1.
The work piston is denoted by 1 and the chamber within which it reciprocates, by 2. rl`hc rotation piston is denoted by 3 and the chamber within which it reciprocates, by 4. These pistons and chambers are located within the cylinders forming in the present instance a. double cylinder 5, which cylinder may be provided at its rear end with a suitable handle 6, and at its l'ront end with a front head 7. An anvil block 8 is mounted in the cylinder 5 in position to be struck by the piston 1. A chuck 9 is rotatably mounted in the front head 7, which chuck is provided wit h a bore for receiving therethrough the shank of a drill steel 10, the rear end of which steel is arranged in position to be engaged by the anvil block S. The drill steel and anvil bleek are shown as provided with axially arranged holes for supplying the pressure lluid to the drill hole to blow the cuttings therefrom. This chuck 9 is provided with a spur gear 11, which meshes with a pinion 12, the axis of which is in alinement with the rotation piston 3. This rotation piston 3 is located along the side of the work piston 1, and a step by step rotary movement is imparted to the rotation piston I by a rifle bar 13 with which the rotation piston has' a sliding interloeked engagement, said rifle bar being arranged to be clutched to and released from the cylinder by means of a ratchet device 14 of any Well known or approved construction. the rot .tionpiston 3 with a frontextension 15, angular 1n cross section, which extensie 1s fitted to slide 1n the bore 16 of the pinion 12, said bore being of the same angular shape in cross section as the extension| 15. Means are provided for reciprocating the rotation piston independently of the 'work piston, which means is herein shown as an independent valve 17 located within a valve chest 18, which valve alternately opens the motive fluid inlet chamber 21 to the 'passages 19, 20, leading to the opposite ends of the rotation piston chamber 4.
The main controlling valve seat 22 is, rovided with the usual passages 23, 21, lea ing to the opposite ends of the work p'iston chamber 2, the passage 26 leading to the fluid inlet chamber 21 and the exhaust passage 25. -The main controlling valve, not
shown herein, may be of any well known or approved construction.
It will be seen that a novel form of rotation for the chuck is shown herein, which rotation is cont-rolled by means entirely inde iendent of the control of the work piston.
hile I have shown and described my invention in connection with a percussive tool ot the piston hammer type. still I do not wish to have it understood that` I confine my invention to such a tool, as -l contemplate the use of this rotation device in connection with percussive tools of any type to which it would be applicable.
IVhat I claim is:
l. Ina percussive tool, a. Work piston, a. rotation piston arranged along the side of the work piston and reciprocating lengthwise ot' the tool, means for imparting a step by step rotary movement to the rotation piston, a chuck rotated by the rotation piston and means for controlling the reciprocations et' the rotation piston independently of the work piston.
2. In a pereussive tool, a work piston, a rotation piston arranged along the side of the work piston and reciprocating lengthwise of the tool, means for imparting a step by step rotary movementl to the rotation piston,'a chuck rotated by the rotation piston 'and a valve for controlling the reciprocations of the rotation piston independently of the reciproeations of the work piston.
3. In a pereussive tool, a work piston, a
chiiek provided with a gear, a pinion meshing therewith, a rotation piston having a sliding interloclted engagement with said pinion, means for imparting a step by step rotary movement to the rotation piston and means for controlling the reeiprocations of the rotation piston indei'iendently of the Work piston.
` 4. In a perciissivc tool, a work piston, a chuck provided with a gear, a pinion meshing therewith, a rotation piston arranged along the side ot a work piston and reciprocating lengthwise of the tool, the said rotation piston having a sliding interloched engagementvith said pinion, means for imparting a step by step rotary inovenient to the rotation piston and means for controlling the reeipreeations ol the rotation piston independently ot the ivoi-k piston.
5. In a pereussive tool, a .vork piston, a rotation piston, their cylinders, a chuck, a pinion geared thereto, a rille har alternately clutched to and released from the rotation piston cylinder,said rotation piston having a sliding interlocked engagement with the rifle bar and engaging said pinion t'or iniparting a rotary movement to the chuck and means for controlling the reciproeations ot the rotation piston independently of the work piston.
6. ln a permissive tool, a Work piston, a
rotation piston. their cylinders, a chu/rk, a l pinion geared thereto7 a rille har alternately clutched to and released from the rotation piston cylinder, said rotation piston being arranged along the side ot the Work piston and having a sliding interloeked engagement with the rifle har, and engaging said pinion for imparting a rotary movementl to 'a sliding interlocked engagement with the rille har and engaging said pinion for imparting a rotary movement to the chuck and means for controlling the reciprocations of the rotation piston independently of the ivork piston, said means comprising a valve, ils chest and passages leading therefrom to the opposite sides of the rotation piston.
S, In a percussive tool, a ivorlrpiston, a rotation piston, their cylinders, a chuck, a pinion geared thereto, a rifle bar alternately cliitrhed to and released from the rotation piston cylinder, said rotation piston being arranged along the side of the Work piston, and having a sliding interloeked engagement with the ritle har and engaging said pinion for imparting a rotary movement to the chuck and means for controlling the reeiproeations of the rotation piston independently of the Work piston, said means eoniprising a valve, its chest and passages leading therefrom to the opposite sides of said rotation. piston.
