To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, YVVILLIABI a citizen of the United States, and a resi dent of the city of New York, borough of lilanhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Package-Seal, of which the followii'ig is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to devices for sealing packages in which a cord or rope is employed and it is desired to prevent the package from being opened by untying such cord.
Among the objects especially aimed at in this instance is to devise a sealing device of not only a simple and cheap construction but which will be reliable for the purpose of preventing the opening of the package or for the purpose of indicating that the package or its contents have been tampered with.
A further object of the invention is to provide a package seal which will inclose the knot and which may be used in connection with cords or ropes of varying sizes.
A still further object is to cheaply con struct a seal for the purpose stated which will be made of one piece and which may be manipulated in the sealing operation with facility.
The foregoing and other objects of this invention will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed and illustrated in the drawings accompanying this specification in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a package wrapped and sealed with a preferred form of this invention. Fig. 2, is a vertical sectional view through the seal; Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same; Fig. 4t is a plan view of the blank before it is folded into position for use; and Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the same on the line 5-5 of Fig. l, the dotted lines in these two figures indicating the positions into which certain parts are to be folded.
A seal made in accordance with this invention is formed of one piece of suitable material, preferably sheet metal, but the design thereof may be varied to a conside able extent without departing from the principle or spirit of the claimed.
Referring more particularly to Figs. a and 5, it will be noted that a metal blank 10 of substantially rectangular configuration W. Fnnsorrn,

The lank is formed substantially at its center with a hole 13 through which the ends of a cord are to be passed and knotted. I wish to state at this time hat while l. use the term cord hereinaft r, such term is to be interpreted as broad enough to cover any sort of flexible tying device. The blank 10 is formed along its margins with integral lips or flanges 16 which are adapted to be folded over toward or upon the main body of the blank, as shown in dotted lines in Figs. l and 5 and in full lines in Fig. 3. iVhen, therefore, the blank is folded upon the transverse line 17, these fla ges 16 will be brought into proximity in pairs. A device as shown in Fig. may be stamped very cheaply from a common grade of tin or other sheet metal, all in one piece, with no replaceable parts.
In tying a package a cord 18 is wrapped around the same in any usual manner and knotted preferably as indicated at 19. lhe loose ends of the cord may then be passed through the hole 13 and a hard knot 20 formed adjacent the inner face of the seal and the loose ends may then be trimmed OK if desired. The folding of the blank 10 over the knot 20 will then be completed by any suitable tool so as to cause the studs 12 to pass through the holes 11 and be upset or clenched as shown at 21, making a substantially closed seal and with the adjacent flanges 16 in engagement with each other. The said flanges, therefore, serve not only to reinforce and strengthen the edges of the seal, but because of their comparatively sharp edges which are directed toward the knot 20, they will prevent the possibility of the knot being drawn out of the seal for the purpose of untying it. It will appear also in this connection that a seal of any standard size may be used in connection with any suitable number or sizes of cords just so the hole 13 is large enough for the two ends to pass through and not too large so that the knot 20 might slip out of the same.
As shown at 22, one of the ones of the sheet metal blank may be extended so as to provide a place for an individual name or number whereby the seals may be identilied by any particular user. Such extension may be employed in connection with either part of the blank, and since the blank is made of one piece throughout, the extension may be provided with facility'and prove effective for its purpose without danger of loss.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The herein described package seal comprising a one piece sheet metal blank apertured for the passage of the ends of a cord, means adjacent the opposite ends of the blank adapted to be brought into registry to secure the-same over and inclose a knot formed of said cord ends, and means associated with the lateral edges of the seal after it is formed into locking position to prevent the knot from being Withdrawn therefrom, said last mentioned means comprising pairs of internal flanges.
2. The combination with a cord, of a one piece sheet metal seal comprising a blank apertured for the passage of the cord ends, means at the opposite ends of the blank adapted to register and lock said ends together, and pairs of flanges along the edges of the blank adapted to be folded over upon the main portion thereof, said flanges when the seal is locked lying opposite each other in pairs and having their free edges extending inwardly toward the knot, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The herein described package seal comprising a unitary sheet metal blank apertured for the passage of the ends of a cord, a hole at one end, an integral stud at the other end adapted to pass through and interlock with said hole when the seal is applied, and pairs of flanges along the lateral edges of the blank which are folded over upon the main portion of the blank and which substantially engage each other by pairs when the seal is in use, substantially as set forth.
