Description

UNITED STATES PATENT FFIGE.
IRVING W. SEARLES, OF TIFFIN, OHIO.
iM PROVEMENT IN LAND-ROLLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 108,057, dated October 4, 1870.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRVING W. SEARLES, 0f Tiffin, in the county of Seneca, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Land-Roller; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the frame and the rollers, as also the arrangement therewith of an adjustable tongue, all of which will be hereinafter fully described.
In the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, A and A represent the main portions of the frame of this roller, and consist in two wooden bars placed parallel to each other, and at a suitable distance apart to c011- tain between the two end rollers O 0. These two portions of the frame are connected together at their ends by means of two metallic bars, 13 B. I
E and E represent metallic frame-pieces, which are constructed in the shape represented in Fig. 2, and are connected to the framepieces A A at right angles, and at a sufficient distance apart to contain between them the rear roller, 1). J represents a portion of the frame which connects the rear ends of the bars E E. The roller D has its bearings and the rollers G C have their inner bearings in the metallic frame-piece E, while the outer bearings of the two rollers G O are in the lower portions of the two end pieces B B.
The frame-pieces E E are so arranged that roller Dtravels immediately behind, but covering the space between the two rollers O G.
F represents the tongue of the roller, which is provided at its rear end with a metallic plate, I, in which is formed a curved slot. This plate works in a slot in a block, H, which is secured to the frame-piece A.
A pinruns through the slot in the plate I and also through the block H, so as toallow' the tongue to rise and fall only so far as desirable, as also to keep it in place.
Gr represents a ball, which is connected to the tongue at its center, and having its ends hinged to the frame-piece A. The tongue is thus allowed to rise and fall independently of the machine, while its rear end is so confined that it is not allowed lateral motion, and can give direction to the roller.
The frame may be hinged, if desirable, to allow the rollers to act independently.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The frame-pieces A A, B, and E E, as constructed and arranged with the rollers O O and D, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of June, 1870.
ANsoN G. BARBER, G. I. KEEN.
