DUST-CATCHER FOR AIR-PIPES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN T. YoUNc, a citizen of the United States, and. a resident of Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Dust-Catcher for Air-Pipes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates more particularly to a dust catcher to be fitted in an air pipe leading to or from a hot air furnace.
It is a design of my invention to provide a device of the character indicated, which will be concealed in the pipe, as for instance below a hot air register.
It is a further design of my invention to provide a dust catcher in which cotton or like fibrous dust-catching material is held in a manner to permit of its being removed or renewed.
It is also a design of the invention to improve in various particulars, devices of the character indicated, to the end that elliciency in operation may be promoted, as well as economy of manufacture.
The invention will be particularly explained in the specific description following.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a dust catcher embodying my invention, showing the same arranged in connection with a hot air pipe and register; Fig. 2 is a perspective view, and Fig. 3 is a cross section.
My improved dust catcher comprises an outer casing of novel construction and an inner cone. The outer casing comprises an inner lining of reticulated material, an outer shell formed of two hinged sections 11, and an interposed layer 12 of cotton, asbestos, or similar fibrous material. The reticulated material 10, which may be woven wire, exposes the dust-catching material 12. The outer sections 11 are suitably hinged at their lower ends, as at 13, to the bottom of the lining 10, and when in a closed position, as indicated in full lines in Fig. 2, completely inclose the fibrous material 12 at the sides and over the top. The outer casing has an open inlet end 14 for the air, and at the opposite end curves inwardly as at 15,

producing a contracted, preferably circular outlet opening 16.
YVithin the outer casing and spaced therefrom, is a cone 17 of a reticulated material, the interior of the cone being adapted to receive a filling 18 of cotton, asbestos, or similar fibrous material adapted to catch dust. The cone may be supported within the outer casing in any suitable manner, preferably by hooked arms 19 secured at their ends to the reticulated material 17 and formed with outwardly disposed hooked ends 20 adapted to engage over the inner ends of the hinged shell sections 11. The base or large end of the cone is of greater diameter than the outlet opening 16, and is disposed adjacent to said opening, the cone however being spaced at all sides from the outer casing, thereby providing an annular space around the cone and between the same and the outer casing, the said spaces by reason of the contracted end 15 of the shell extending in an inward direction toward said out-let 16. The outer shell tapers toward the inlet end, and is illustrated as being seated in the flaring outlet end 21 of a hot air pipe 22, said flared pipe section having a neck 23 provided with an outwardly disposed flange 24, which may be let into a floor 25 beneath a hot air register 26.
It will be observed that when in position, the dust catcher is concealed within the air pipe. Furthermore, the improved form of the dust catcher causes the air to strike the cone, the apex of which projects beyond the inlet opening 14 of the outer casing. The air will contact with the cone at all sides and will deposit the dust therein onto the cotton or other fiber exposed through the reticulated wall of the cone. Owing to the outlet 16 being contracted within the diameter of the adjacent end of the cone, the air space between the cone and the outer casing presents no direct passage for the air, and the latter therefore will be deflected outwardly and then inwardly in passing to the said outlet. Thus the walls of the air passage both interiorly and exteriorly present broad fibrous surfaces against which the air will contact, and onto which the dust will be deposited before passing to the register. The hinged outer shell sections afford ready and. convenient access to the interior space of the outer casing for removing or renewal of the fibrous material therein. Similarly the fibrous filling of the cone can be conveniently removed and renewed.
In the form shown the arms 1.9 for sustaining the cone detachably engage the shell sections 11 at the opening 16, so that the cone may be readily removed, and detached from the outer casin Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A dust catcher adapted to fit within an air pipe of a hot air furnace, to be concealed within said pipe, and comprising an outer casing having an inlet at one end and an outletat the opposite end and flaring from the inlet toward the opposite end, and an inner reticulated cone adapted to receive a filling of fibrous material, the cone being disposed with its apex adjacent to the inlet of the outer casing, said casing having double walls spaced to receive a fibrous material, the inner wall being reticulated.
2. A dust catcher adapted to be received in an air pipe of a hot air furnace, to be con cealed therein, and comprising an outer casing having an inlet at one end and an outlet at the opposite end, and an inner cone,
there being an annular flaring space between the cone and easing, the cone being reticulated and adapted to receive a filling of fibrous material, the casing being formed of spaced walls adapted to receive a filling of fibrous material therebetween, the inner wall of the casing being reticulated, and the outer wall bemg composed of separate sections lunged to open and close.
3. A dust catcher adapted to be received in,
opposed, reticulated walls defining said passage and being hollow to receive dust-catching material, the casing having an outer shell formed of separate sections adapted to be opened and closed.
