CAR-FRAME CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2, 1913.
Application led November 8, 1912. Serial No. 730,220.
new and useful Improvement in Car-Frame l Construction, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a car end frame showing certain features of my improved construction. Fig. 2 is a plan View partly in section taken on line 2-'2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevational view looking at the right hand side of Fig. 1, and illustrating the application of the device t0 the car platform frame. Fig. 4 is a side elevation partly in section on line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
This invent-ion relates generally to railway car construction, and more specifically to the one-piece, cast metal car end frames of the type disclosed in Patent #917,716, issued April 6, 1909, and #929,705, issued to me August 3, 1909. One of the most important features in the construction of the present types of railway cars, and particularly those used for the transportation of passengers, mail and express matter and baggage, is the reinforcing of the ends of the cars so as to provide an exceptionally strong and rigid construction which will efl'ectually resist end shocks and crushing stresses delivered to the ends of the cars. The purpose of such construction is to overcome the tendency of the cars to telescope in case of collisions and to afford the greatest possible degree of safety to the occupants and contents of the cars.
My improvement contemplates a comparatively light-weight, strong and durable onepiece cast metal structure, formed, braced and connected to the car underframe and superstructure so as to combine therewith in resisting end shocks and crushing stresses imparted to the end of the car, thereby pro viding a construction which is anti-telescopic in effect.
One object of my invention is to provide an end frame of the sort described having formed therein end door posts cast with parts specially formed to accommodate the vestibule diaphragm, and to provide parts on the end frame specially formed to accommodate the supports of the vestibule diaphragm. y
Another object of my invention is to provide in an end frame of the class described which is cast with integral upright and transverse members, specially formed parts which are adapted to accommodate and support the shaft of the hand wheel brake or similar Vworking, parts of the car equipment.
By reference to the drawing it will be seen that my invention contemplates an integrally cast end frame having the lower member 1, the upper member 2, door posts 4, upright members 5 and transverse members 6. The end frame as shown is provided with a central door opening, and is adapted for use in passenger cars and others employing the end door, the door posts are formed with deep web portions 7 and nished at their outer extremities with the broad facing flanges 8. The flanges 8 afford an attaching place for the vestibule diaphragm 9 illustrated in Fig. 2, which is secured thereto by stay strips 10 bolted to the flanges 8 by the bolts 11. The upper transverse member as shown in these iig-4 ures is provided with the fianges or brackets 12 in whichare formed the apertures 14 which are provided to accommodate the stems of the diaphragm buffers. Formed on the upright or transverse members of the end frame to one side of the door opening are the flanges or brackets 15 in which are provided the apertures 16. These apertured ianges are provided for the purpose of accommodating the shafts for the hand brake which is positioned at the end of the car.
From the foregoing it is obvious that my improved car construction provides a structure which is particularly adapted to prevent telescopic movement of the end frame relative to the underframe, and that the several features described especially adapt cast steel end frames to the accommodation of various elements of the car equipment.
I am aware that by changes other forms of my invention may be produced, and I therefore do not intend that my invention be limited to the specific forni shown and described, but that it be construed to cover all obvious changes and modications.
I claiml. In car construction, an integrally cast end frame formed with upright and trans verse members, a pair of the upright meinbers performing the functionsof door posts, brackets integral with said door posts at predetermined points near their upper ends,
and which brackets are perforated to receive the diaphragm buiifer stems.
2. In car construction, an integrally cast Y end frame formed with upright and transverse members, brackets formed integral With certain of said upright members at predetermined points, and which brackets are perforated to provide bearings -for the diaphragm buffer stems, and the hand brake shafts.
4. `In car construction, an integrally cast end frame, provided With an end door opening, door posts integral with said frame at the sides of said door opening, which door posts are substantially Wider thanthe Width oit' the end frame, and laterally projecting flanges integral with the outer ends of said door posts, which flanges `are adapted to receive the inner ends 'of the flexible 4diaphragm.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature inthe presence of two Witnesses, this 22d day of'ctober, 1912.
