HYDRANT AND REEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 25,1913.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE A. OwEN and GEORGE A. BATES, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of Hartford and New Britain, respectively, in the county of Hartford and State of Connectlcut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrants and Reels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates particularly to 1mprovements in hydrants such as used fontire purposes, that are loca-ted near the sidewalk curbing of streets, and have valve connections in their lower portions below the ground to receive water under considerable pressure from the normal or special high pressure water main.
The object of our present invention 1s to provide an attachment in the form of a rotatable casing or reel mounted to turn on a vertical aXis at the top portion of the hydrant casing, for purpose of carrying a coil of hose; and which in both kthe woundl position in the receptacle, and in the'unwound or stretched position is connected or coupled to the hydrant casing for use, sol
that by merely pulling on the hose to unwind it, and then opening the water valve at the lower portion of the hydrant casing, the apparatus is ready for use.
In the accompanying drawings illustrat` ing one embodiment of our invention,- Figure 1 shows the upper, or above-ground portion of the hydrant. Fig. 2 1s a vertical axial section of the device as shown in'Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectionon the line 3-3, of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 shows enlarged one of the door hinges.
In the drawing, 6 represents the upper or the above-ground portion of a hydrant casing, that it will be understood, is provided with some kind of a valve arrangement in its lower portion, having operating means such as a shaft 7 carrying a gear 8 meshing with a gear 9 that can be turned by a'crank handle 10 at the side of the casing; but such construction forms no part of the present invention, and any desired form of valve controlling means may be employed.
The upper end portion of the casing 6 is provided with a reduced extension 12 of cylindrical form, that is connected with the casing by a shoulder portion 13; and the top of the extension 12 is shown as closed by `an endl member 14; the cylindrical side wall of the extension being provided with a series of ports 15.
A cap member 16 is shown having its cylindrical bore rotatably engaging the extension 12 and provided with a flange 17 at the base resting on the shoulder portion 13 of the casing; the top of the cap member being closed by a portion 18. The side of the cap 16 is provided with a port 19 at which is secured a hose coupling 20 for connection with a line of hose 21 of any desired form.
It will be understood that the port 19 of the cap memberwill at all times register with one of the ports 15 of the casing, so that the hose is always in communication with the interior of the hydrant casing to receive the water when the valve is opened through the controlling stem 7.
The hose 21 will be wound around the cap member 16 when 'it is turned by suitable means, such as a crank handle 22, and to support the hose we provide a receptacle in the form of a Shell 23, consisting of a bottom member 24 suitably secured to the hydrant casing 6, being shown as bolted to a 4flanged sleeve 25, that is bolted to the casing outside of the shoulder portion 13; the bottom 24 having a central opening surrounding the cap 16; and the sleeve 25 having an internal flanged portion 26 engaging the upper face of the flange 17 at the base of the cap 16, whereby the cap member is secured in its rotative position.
The shell 23 has a cylindrical side portion 27, forming an annular chamber with the cap member forreceiving the hose 21 in its wound-up position, as shown in Fig. 3.
A suitable closure is provided at the top of the side'portion 27 of the shell, such as a removable lid 28 shown in the form of a cone, having a cylindrical flange portion 29 at the bottom fitting over the side portion 27 of the shell at its top.
-The side portion 27 of the shell is provided with an opening at 30 through which the end of the hose 21 is passed, and then the hose can be pulled through said opening to unwind it, thereby rotating the cap member 16. until the hose is entirely unwound eX- cept the end portion that will remain connected at the coupling 20.
At the opening 30 is provided a suitable door 31 connected with the shell by hinges 32 and 33, one of which is shown in Fig., 4;, as comprising a member 34 secured to the. door and 'a "member v35 secured 'to the side; These tivo members have.
27 of the shell. the usual registering apertures for receiving and which will further serve ito Zretain the door inthe closed position, avoiding the necessity of any special door securing nieans for locking it closed.
In the use of the'device, it 'is only necesy vsary to open the door 31, Vgrasp the hose Yby lthe nozzle end 'and pull it out th'rough the opening until it is entirely untvound Where upon th'e valve at the -fbottomof the-hydrant y scan be opened by means of 'the-'handle 10,'or I other means that may be provided `or vsuch 4 purpose.
When it is desired to return the hose to the casing, it is only necessary to rota'te-the cap rinemb'e'r'loy the 'crank handle'QQ, andor;y thispurpose thejlid 'is simply removed fby lifting it lod from the ltop; the hosel'will 'bef reivound upon the cap4 member `16, -passifngl back through the 'opening at k30 until it "isi, entirely Within'the Shell asindicated '1in Fig. i 3, When the fdoo'r 31 'can be closed, and the `lid 28 replaced. We claim rotatable on the extension and .proi'fided with 'a port vin the side arranged -ito register with the said extension ports, the cap having a flange at `the base engaging the vsaid shouldered portion vof Athe casing, yla shell 'comprising 'an 'annular base 'secured ito Ithe casing with its inner marginal portion enf'gaging the top a'ce of thecafp flangefto retain 'the 'cap in its rotative position, the she'll having cylindrical lsides opposite the cap 'sides to -f`o'rin an 'annular .Tor
containing a hose secured Zat said Vcoupling fand `Wound arOundfthe capfandtaremovabk Elid on the easing.
