PLOW.
Specification of Iietters Patent.
Patented Nov. 25, 1913.
Application filed June 19, 1913. Serial No. 774,690.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD BRADFQRD JAMES, a citizen of the United States, res1ding at Cordele, in the county of Crisp and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Plow, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plows and more particularly to means for adjustably connecting a plow standard to the beam and also for connecting the handles to the beam.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a novel form of casting adapted to be connected to the rear end portion of the plow beam and which has means for engaging the handles and holding them securely so as to prevent play, said casting being also provided with novel means for engaging a brace extending rearwardly from a standard which is pivotally connected to the beam.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement ofparts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing fro-mthe spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the present improvements applied,
to a plow beam. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the casting used in connection with the beam. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the upper end portion of the plow standard. Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on the line AB Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a casting provided, upon opposite sides of the rear portion thereof, with parallel ribs 2 forming chan nels 3 constituting seats for the lower end portions of handles 4:, these handles being held securely to the casting by means of bolts 5, a small aperture 6 being formed in the casting for the reception of one of the bolts while the other bolt is extended through a large opening 7 provided for reducing the weight of the casting. It will be noted that that part of the casting within which the channels 3 are formed is of gradually increasing thickness toward its upper end so in the extension and are a as to constitute a wedge-shaped spacing element between the handles 4.. Casting 1 is provided, in advance of the ribs 2, with an arcuate channel 8 located directly back of a box-like extension 9, this channel 8 being formed with atransverse rib 1O intersected by a bolt hole 11. The extension 9 is so proportioned as to constitute a snug seat for the rear end portion of the plow beam G and a top portion 12 is mounted on the extension and serves to extend over the rear end portion of beam C so as thus to prevent said portion from lifting up out of the extension. The bottom of the extension is closed. Transverse openin s 13 are formed dapted to receive a fastening bolt 14: which extends through beam G and thus serves to hold the beam securely in the extension. The plow standard 15 is formed of a channeled strip curved from end to end, the front face of the standard being cut away, as at 16 so as thus to permit the standard to straddle the beam Openings 1? are formed in the sides of the standard: and receive a pivot bolt 18 which extends through the beam. An arcuate brace 19 is extended rearwardly and upwardly from an intermediate portion of the standard 15 and is formed in one piece with the standard as by welding or, if preferred, can be attached to the standard by means of bolts. It is merely necessary that the brace be held fixed relative to the standard 15 at all times. This brace is concentric with the pivot bolt 18 and is extended into the channel 8, the free end portion of the brace being provided with a slot 20 into which extends a bolt 21 seated in the opening 11. The inner side of the brace is formed with transverse grooves 22 any one of which is adapted to receive the rib 10. i
It will be seen that by loosening the bolt 21, the brace 19 can be sprung laterally so as to become disengaged from rib 10 and to then be shifted longitudinally to bring any desired one of the grooves 22 opposite rib 10 after which the bolt 21 can be tightened. Obviously this operation will result in the angular adjustment of the standard 15 about the pivot 18.
It will be seen that the device herein described can be applied readily to a plow beam, whether formed of wood or metal and constitutes eflicient means for attaching both the plow standard and the handles to the beam.

What is claimed is 1. The combination with a plow beam, :1 standard hingedly connected thereto and an arcuate brace extending fromiheplow stand? aid and concentric with its pivot, of a member having a box-like extension constituting a seat for the rear end of the beam, said beam being secured within the extension, there being an arcuate channel within said member and into which the brace extends, said brace having a slot, cooperating means in the channel and upon the brace for holding the brace against sliding movement in the channel, and means tor binding the brace against one wall of the channel.
2.. The combination. with a plow beam, a standard adjustable angu'larly relative thereto, and a brace extending from the standard and concentric with the pivot of the stand.- ard, of-a member extending partly around and secured to the rear end portion of the beam, said member being formed with a channel in which the brace is slidtbly mounted, said brace having a slot, there being-a plurality of recesses in the inner side of the brace, means Within the channel for projecting into any one of the, recesses to hold the brace against sliding movement, and means for clamping the brace in the channel.- a
The combination with a plow beam, 21 standard adjustable angularly thereon, and a brace extending'from the beam and concentric with the pivot of the beam, of a single member for fixedly engaging the rear end of the beam, for engagement by the handles of the plow, and for slidable engagement by the brace, and means for binding the brace upon said beam to hold the standard against adjustment.
4. The combination with a plow beam, a standard mounted for angular adjustment thereon, and a brace extending from the standard and concentric with the pivot thereof, of a casting having a box-like extension A.
constituting a seat for the rear end of the beam, there being a channel within the cast- 111g and back ofthe extension for the reception of the brace, said brace being slotted,
and there being opposed channels in the back EDWARD BRADFORD JAMES.
