PETER H. LINDSEY, OF LOGKPORT, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEAT AND VEGETABLE SLICERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 107,932. dated October 4, 1870.
To all whom 'it may concern: Be it known that I, -PETER H. LrNDsEY, of
the city of Lockport, county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Slicing-Machines; and
I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which--V Figure I is a perspective view of a machine for slicing vegetables and other things, the knife being detached; and Fig. Il is aperspective view of the knife as it appears detached from the remainder ofthe machine.

. This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in fastening, adjusting, and re moving theknife used in slicing-machines.
The improvement consists in making the knife removable at pleasure by simply rei moving a single nut, easily turned by the hand; also, by the same means-viz., by turning up or loosening the same nut-the knife can be adjusted and held at anyl desired angle.
The advantages of this arrangement are that the knife can be easily and quickly removed when it requires sharpening, or for other reasons it becomes `desirable to remove it; also, that it can be readily and firmly adjusted and held at any angle, thereby regulating the thickness of its cut; also, a thinner knife can be used, whereby it works in an improved manner. f

the opening F and groove G are of such dimensions as to receive and be filled by the knife, and allow it to be turned down, so that its upper side will lie in the same plane as the surface of the bed-piece H H, completely filling the groove G, and closing up the space F. E represents an opening or slotcut through one of the side pieces I, so large that the knife can be drawn out and returned to its place through the same; and L represents an opening in and through the opposite side piece, large enough to receive a cylindrical extension of the back of theknife.

When the knife is inserted into its place through the .slot E, the end C enters the opening L and passes through the side I'. The fixed nut D stops the knife after it has passed through the side I far enough to allow the blade A to clear the side I. The nut B is then screwed upon the end G until it presses rmly upon the side I', thus holding the knife in any position the operator sees fit to place it in.
By holding the fixed nut D with one hand, and loosening the nut B with the other, it is evident the edge of the blade A can heelevated or depressed at pleasure, and, by tightening up the nut B, will be fixed in the desired position.
The back of the knife revolves in and is supported by the groove G, which relieves the` strain upon the ends passing through the sides, and prevents the knife from springing,
and allows the knife to be made much lighter than it could otherwise be.
