Description

NAPETEHS. FHoTo-LITHOGRAFHEH, WASHINGTON D C t@ stent -dtttg-w.
STILLMAN PARKER, OE ALTOONA, PENNSYLVNIA.
Letters Patent No. 107,622-, dated September 20,' 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN' BOOP-.SHAVING MACHINES.
` The Schedule referredto in 'these Letters Patent and making parl: of the same To all whom tt may concern Be it known that I, STLLLMAN PARKER, of A1- toona, in the county of Blair and in the State 'of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hoop-Shaving Machines and do hereby declare that lthe following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein Ihave set forth the nature and principles of my said improvement, by which my invention may be distinguished. from others of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire secure by Letters Patent; v
My invention relates to that class of machines used for the purpose vof shaving hoops for barrels, casks, Ste., and the nature thereof consists in certain moditications in-the details and improvements in the construction of..the same, whereby both the sides, and edges of the hoop may be shaved simultaneously and work of any size required performed, hereinafter fully specified. o
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates my iivention and forms a part of the specitication there- ,o
Figure lis a perspective view of my invention, with one of the legs or uprights of the frame removed;
Figure 2, a plan view of the same; and
Figure 3, au under-side view of the plate or top of the machine.
The construction, operation, and relative arrangemeatA of the component parts of my invention are as follows:
A A represent four uprights or legs, rmly braced together at their lower ends by means of the transverse supports aa', and supporting 'at their upper ends the metallic plate or table B, which is screwed d own thereon.
Screwed or formed on the said table is a triangularshaped metallic block, C, having .a slot of suitable width and depth, extending through its entire length, or from its apex to its base, to allow the hoop being shaved to pass through it.
A knife, c, constructed similarly to the ordinary plane-bit, and provided with an elongatedslot, is located upon the upper side of the block O, near one edge ofits inclined portion, with its cutting-surface resting directly over the slot cnt in the said block C, in .such a manner as to come in contact with the upper edge of the hoop on its first entering said slot.
Bymeans of the screw c1 passing through the elongated slot of knife c, and entering the block G, the said knife may be adjusted at any desired point, or removed for sharpening or renewal, when required.
D D represent two other knives, made similarly to knife c, but larger in dimensions, with elongated slots, through which pass set-screws, (l d, and resting against the conically-shaped portion, orV inclined `sides of the block C, the sides of said knives being atright angles with the upper surface of the' table or plate B.,
These knives are for the purpose of shaving the sides of the hoop.
Y Situated directly in front of the knives D D, and in close proximity therewith, are ,the tinted or corrugated rollers E E, secured upon the vertical shaftsr F- F, passing through elongated slots, j f, cut in the plate B, (see iig. 2,) and yhaving attached to their lower ends pinions or cogs, c, gearing into each other.
By means of the elongated slots ff, it will be seen that the upper ends of the shafts F, carrying the luted rollersl E, may be laterally adj usted, in the manner hereinafter described, for the purpose of placing the saidrollers nearer or further apart, in order to receive hoops of any desired thickness, which are to be shaved.
The rollers E are designed for the purpose of feeding the work to be performed to the knives aforesaid,V their teeth or corrugations, while being revolved,
grasping the work and carryihgit forward toits proper destination G G designate two levers, having their fulcrums at the points g g, the pivots of which are made to enter the under side of the table or plate B at-one end, and recesses cut in the upper side of a pendant or support, a, secured to the said plate or table, at 'the opposite end.
The right-angular ends of the said pendant are provided on their upper surfaces with female screws for the reception of vthe male screws It' 71.', which pass through apertures cut in the plate B.
Thev outer ends of the ,levers G G are-supplied with` of the vertical shafts F, against which they bear, and` also formed thereat with scmicircular shoulders, gl g, against which presses one end of the horizontal cylindrical rubber pieces or springs y? g2, the 'opposite ends of said, springs being retained in position by means of metallic circular plates, g3 g.
rIhe screws g4 g4 are for the purpose of giving the required tension to thev springs g2 g2, and pass through lngsor projections, k k, secured to the lower side of the table B.
The object` of 'th'esprings g2 g2 is to allow the shafts F to yield laterally, causing their uted rollers to automatically' adjust themselves to the size of the work to be performed.
Zdesignates a slot, lof 'a suitable length, cut in the table B, into which is inserted in au inclined position, the lower knife c2, fo'r shaving the lower edge of the hoop.
The upper end of said knife is made to extend up# ward through its slot, and project ashort distance beyond the same, so as to-come in contact with the edge of thehoop to he shaved,- and the lower end thereof is suppliedv with an elongated slot, through which passes a set-screw, c, entering a beveled slot' cut in a removable block, c, screwed to the under side of table B. l
L designates a metallic transverse plate or support screwed down to the crosspieces a a' of frame or uprights, A, and constructed with two small semicircular projections, (only partially, one of which is shown in the drawing,) for the purpose of receivingV and forming bearings for the lowerends of the vertical shafts 14, one of said shafts being made to extend below the support L, in order to receive a beveled horizontal gear-wheel, m.
The beveled gear-wheel m engages 'with a correspondingly beveled pinion, n, located np'ou the transverse horizontal shaft I, havingr its bearings in -journal-boxes j i,screwed down to the cross-pieces a a of uprights A.
adjustable knives D D ce2, and the elongated apertures ff, feed-rollers E E, shafts F F, levers G Gr, springs g2 g2, pinions e e, and wheels m and n, when coustrncted and operating together as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto `set my hand this 26th lday of March, 1870.
' STILLMAN PARKER.
