WALTER A. THOMAS, OF NEW AUGUSTA, INDIANA.
CULTIVATOR-FENDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Iz'tten'ted Nov. 18, 1913.
Application filed November' 29, 1912. Serial No. 734,171.
To all fr0/0m it may folwem Be it known that l, lVAL'rnn A. THOMAS, a citizen ot the United States, residing at New Augusta, in the county ot' Marion and State ot' indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements iin, Cllltivater-Fenders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a. full. clear, and exact description oit the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
M v invention relates to an improved tender :t'or the plows ot a eultivator.
The object oit my improvenlent is to provide a 'tender ot such construction as to render it readily attac-hable to the ordinary 'torms ot riding cultivators, and means thereon for conveniently raising the tender out ot operative position by the foot of the operator.
A t'urther object is to provide a guard for clearing the path of the :tender ot stalks or other obstructions.
ln the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my .improved tender as applied to use upon a plow beam of ordinary construc tion, and, Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings, wherein like ret'erence numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views. l. represents the main plow beam of a riding cultivator having the auxiliary beams 2 and 3 connected therewith at (flitl'erent points longitudinally ot the n'iain beam. Each oit the beams is provided with the ordinary form of plow point 4t.
livotally secured to the t'orward portion ot the main beam l is the supporting arm 5 ot' the tender blade t3. The rear end ot the blade t is provided with an upwardly eX- tending and vertically adjustable arm 7, having the upper end ott'set and pivoted to the rear end oitl the lever 8 oit the pedal 9, the Yforward end of the lever 8 being bent or crooked to provide an upwardly inclined pedal 9.
The forward end of the lever 8 is pvoted within the looped portion of bracket l0 secured to the auxiliary beam 3 and braced against the main beam l by the bolt 1l, one of the ends of said bracket being bent into engagement with the under side of the auxiliary beam 23 for more securely supportlng it in position. ly means of the pvot at f the t'orwa rd end ol the arm 5, the blade (i is allowed to move downwardly by gravity until the curved pedal end l) o't' the lever 8 engages against the 'trout 'tace ot the looped portion ot' the bracket l0, and to adjust the blade vertically, relative to the points il, it merely m-cessal'y to remove thc bolt 12 securing the arm 7 to the blade (S and engaging it with any desired o't the spaced openings in the lower end oit said arm.
The Vforward portion o't the arm 5 is ott'set or bent outwardly ilirom the main beam l in order to avoid the plow points of the cultivator, and lo said o'llset portion is secured an angle iron lil, ha ving secured thereon, directly forwardly o'l the blade (l. the verti (valkY adjustable stalk guard 114, having the brace arm l5 connected thereto and adjustable to tl i angle iron 1?. rlhe stalk guard llland brace arm '15 a re each provided with slots through which are secured bolts 1G.
lVhat l claim is:-
'lhe combination with the main and auxiliary beams ot' a cultivator, oi an arm pivoted to the main beam and carried thereby, a bracket having a looped portion and do\vn- Vwardly directed ends secured to an auxiliary beam. a lever pivoted in the looped portion of said bracket, the t'ront end ot' said lever' being turned upwardly and normally resting against the 'trout tace o't' said bracket for supporting the rear end in a horizontal plane, and a link pivoted at one end to the rear end o'l the lever and adjustably secured at the opposite end to the blade.
In testimony whereo'l lf have signed my name to this specilication in the presence oi two subscribing' witnesses.
VALTER A. THOMAS. l'Vitnesses J. N. STEWART, GRACE Grass.
