To of! whom it me 1 concern Be it known that I, ISAAC WV. I'IOLLA'ND, a citizen of the United States of America, and. resident of Midlothian, in the county of Ellis and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vire- Stretchers, of which the following is a spccitication.

This invention relates to wire stretcher-s and particularly to a device used for drawing the ends of wire together for the purpose of splicing the same, the invention contemplating the provision of novel means acting as a combined wire gripping device and a staple or wire fastener displacer, so that an operator may pull a staple or wire fastener or grapple a wire for the purpose of stretching the same by the same pull.

A further object of this invention is to provide a. wire stretcher which will retain the ends of a wire together, means being provided for suspending the wire stretcher without the aid of the operator so that the operator may be free to manipulate the ends of the wire for the purpose of splicing the same.

A further object of this invention is to produce a wire stretcher of the character noted which will possess advantages in points of simplicity, etliciency and durability, proving at the same time comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of the wire stretcher embodying the invention; Fig. 2 illustrates a view in elevation on an enlarged scale, of a fragment of the wire stretcher; Fig. 3 illustrates a top plan view of a fragment of a wire stretcher; Fig. t illustrates the wire stretcher in operative position with relation to the ends of a wire to be stretched; and Fig. 5 illustrates the wire stretcher in the position to which it has been manipulated for drawing the ends of the wire together, the said illustration showing the manner of suspending the wire stretcher.

which notches form seats for the pin 8 which extends through the link 9, the said link being adjustable longitudinally of the bars (3 by being placed in the seats at such appropriate position as to make the device effective for stretching the wire which may be applied to the hook 10 supported by the end of the link 9. made of steel wire with a V-shaped seat 11 in which the wire is wedged to increase the frictional contact between the wire and the hook proportional to the pull or force exerted in stretching the wire.

The two bars (3, 6, which form the body of the stretcher are held in separated relation to each other by means of an arm 12, which is secured between the bars ('5, 6, at one end by means of the fastcnings 13, the said arm 19. being provided with a chain or other hanger 14: with a wire engaging member such as the hook 15 designed to engage and be supported by the wire of a fence, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing. The bars 6, 6, are held in separated relation to each other at the opposite end by the shank 16 of the grappling books 17 which grappling hooks are of curved formation and terminate in pointed ends 18 which are designed to be inserted in a staple or back of a wire fastoner for the purpose of displacing said staple or wire fastener. The hooks are further provided with seats l9 for the recep tion of wire. The hook 17 comprises the shank 16 as stated and two fork like members 1S) Wllitll converge slightly and each is provided with a point 18, the function of which has been heretofore stated. The shank 16 is secured in place by the fasteners 20 which may be in the form of rivets or other securing devices so that the structure is of great durability and efliciency,

In using the wire stretcher for the purpose of drawing together two ends of a wire for the purpose of splicing the same, one end of the wire is applied to the hook 10 and the other end of the wire is applied to the hook 17 when the parts are in the relation shown in Fig. '1. I claim- 1. In a Wire stretcher, a body comprising two separated bars having coinciding notches, an arm secured to the bars at one end, a hanger on the said arm, a hook having a shank, means for securing the shank to the arms. said hook having a notch therein for engaging a Wire, a link having a cross pin adapted to rest in the notches of the bar, and a hook carried by the link for cooper ation With the first mentioned hook.

7 2. In a wire stretcher, a body comprising bars with coinciding notches forming seats, a link extending between the bars, a cross pin in the link adapted to rest in the seats of the bars, a Wire engaging member carried in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
