To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY S. BRYAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Capes, Blankets, and Shelter-Tents, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a combined cape, blanket and shelter tent and the objects of my invention are to provide a device of this character wherein is embodied improved construction which will facilitate the ready adaptation of the device for the purposes named; to so construct and arrange my improved device as to obviate the necessity of providing the usual button closed opening which ordinarily leads downward from the neck opening; to provide in connection with my device an improved collar construction of such arrangement as to admit of its being readily adapted for use as a cape or poncho collar or to permit of its being used as a closure for the neck opening of the garment; to so construct the device as to admit of its beingconverted into a substantial and well braced tent and to produce other improvements the details of which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a view of the device in use as a cape or poncho, F ig. 2 is a view in perspective of the device when employed as a tent, Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device in the open position, Fig. 4 is a detail view in perspective of the collar and that portion of the body of the device which contains the neck opening, and, Fig. 5 is a detail view in perspective illustrating: the manner of supporting and bracing the tent.

Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

In carrying out my invention, I employ a sheet or body 1 of suitable flexible and water-proof material, the longer sides there of when the same is laid flat as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, presenting slightly curved edges and the parallel ends thereof, which meet the ends of said curved edges, being preferably straight as shown. The body 1 which may be formed of one or more pieces of material, has its longer sides formed with curved edges as shown, while the parallel opposing ends thereof are preferably Specification of Letters Patent.

straight. Adjacent to each of the curved edge." and at the junction of the square or straight ends of the sheet or body with the curved edges thereof, I provide eyelet or gromets 2 and at or about the center of the width of the sheet at points equidistant from the ends thereof, I provide similar eyelets or gromets 3 and likewise provide adjacent to said ends and in line with the gromets 3 eyelets or groinets 4.

Slightly to one side of the center of the width of the body or sheet and about midway of the length thereof, I provide a suitably bound slit or opening 5 and between this opening and the line of the center of the width of the body or sheet, I secure one edge of a collar member 6, this collar comprising an oblong piece of flexible material which is formed with a curved recess (3 in its outer or unattached portion of such form as to fit snugly about the neck of the wearer when the device is used as a cape or poncho. On one of the short edges (3" formed by the opening or recess 6 in the collar, is provided a button socket 7 and on the other short edge (3 on the opposing side of said recess mouth, the collar is provided with a projecting button 8 which is adapted to be pressed into engagement with the socket 7. Between the recess (3 and the attached edge of the collar, 1 provide the collar with a button socket 9 which when the collar is pressed downward over the opening 5, is ada iited to be engaged by a projecting button 10 of the body 1.

On opposite sides of the neck opening 5 and collar 6, I provide arm holes, one of which is shown at 11, each of these arm holes being adapted to be covered by a suitable oblong llap 12 which is stitched or otherwise secured to the body 1 adjacent to the arm hole, Each of these flaps is provided with a button socket 12 which is adapted to engage a projecting button 13 adjacent to the arm hole 11, thus providing coverings for the arm holes, which may be readily disengaged when desired.

In utilizing my device as a cape or poncho, the fabric body is draped from the shoulders of the w zarer, the head and neck of the wearer being inserted through the opening 5 and the collar being adapted as shown, to be made to embrace the neck of the wearer, in which position it may be fastened in front of the neck after the manner shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, by pressing the button 8 into the socket 7. When the garment is thus draped, the wrists and hands of the wearer may be extended through the arm openings 11, the flaps 12 having been previously unbuttoned.

In utilizing my device as a tent, two vertical tent poles, one of which is indicated at 14, are employed, each of said poles having the usual upper end reduced pin extension 15. These pin extensions are made to pass through the intermediate eyelets or gromets 3 and the body of the fabric which extends between said poles is made to drape equally on opposite sides of a horizontal ridge rope 16 which extends between the upper portions of the poles l t and upon which the body 1 is supported at the center of its width. This ridge rope has its re- 7 spective end portions passing outward through the gromets 3, thence wound about the pin extensions of the poles l-i from which the rope terminals extend outward and downward and are secured to ground pegs 17. Those portions of the fabric body which are between the gromets 3 and the ends of the body 1, not being supported by the ridge rope or otherwise, drop downward in the form of overlapping folds which form the ends of the tent. The side members of the tent which are on opposite sides of the ridge rope, have their base or lower edge portions drawn outward the desired distance and secured to ground pegs or pins 18 by means of peg ropes 19 which are connected with the gromets 2. In this manner an elongated tent is produced which has its ends olosedand which ends may be readily lifted to gain admission to the tent. It will be understood that when the device is used as a'tent the flaps 12 are buttoned securely over the arm holes 11 and that the collar 6 is likewise buttoned over the head and neck opening 5. It will also be evident that the body 1 may be readily utilized as a rain or weather proof blanket or as awater-proof cover for supplies etc.

A particular feature of my invention, lies in the construction and arrangement of the garment collar and its relation to the head and neck opening 5. By forming the collar of a separate oblong piece as shown and providing the same with the neck recess, buttons and button engaging sockets whereby the collar ends may be secured in front of the neck of the wearer and whereby the collar when not in use as such, may be used as a cover flap for the opening 5, it is obvious that a desirable construction and operation is attained.

A second feature of my invent-ion lies in the fact that the garment produced, is not provided with the usual slitor opening which ordinarily extends from the neck opening through the front of the garment. By so forming my garment as to obviate the employment of this front slit or opening, a more efiective water and weather resisting garment is produced.

From the foregoing description, it will be seen that simple and eflicient means are herein provided for accomplishing thev objects of the invention, but while the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes within its purview such changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claim.

What I claim, is: V

A combined cape, blanket and shelter tent comprising a body portion having neck and arm holes therein, a substantially rectangular cover for the neck hole having one longi- V tudinal edge normally free, the said free edge having a semi-circular portion removed to conform to the neck in forming a collar. thereby forming a short edge upon either side of said open portion, means for fastening the short edges of said rectangular cover in overlapping position, means for fastening said cover flat across its hole, covers for said arm-holes of flap form, and means for fastening said last named covers flat across said arm-holes.
