"State of Pennsylvania, have "invented anew andrRANoIs eLioK ANDURIA Knorr, or ALLENTOWN, PrnINsriNANIA- Leners Patent No. 107,899, dated oaqbem, 1870.`
IMPRovEMENT IN .GRATES.
The Schedule referred vto in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Tofall whmw tt may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANCIS GLIGK andUnmH KEUR, of Allentown, `in Athevcounty of Lehigh and x improved Grate; and we do hereby declare that the i `following is a full, clear and exact `de scription there- `except with great diiiiculty, and, in any case, only ing-devices.
proved grate.
of, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use -th'e same, referencebeing had to` the accompanying drawing forming part of" this specilication, in whichp 1 r Figure l represents a Figure -2 is a front view of thesanie. Figure `iis a transverse section of the saine. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.` g
i rIhis invention has for itsobject to improvenpon the grate patented to Thomas .lolnpkinson,August 17, 1869. `In his case., the detachable central section of the I grate is supported, at'its `rear `end, by 'round trunnions fitting in recesses, o'r, grooved in the stationary outer portiorrof 'the same, and .the twoare connected, in Afront, bya double hook, which fits at its respective ends in slots or notches of the two sec.- tions. This constructionis objectionable for the folp lowing reasons:
' First, three separate castings are required,'viz: the fixed lrouter, and the detachable central section of the grate,..and the hook. C
Second, the hookfcannot `be applied, when heated,
with the aid; ot'. tongs, pincers, or other similar hold- Third, besides theexpense ofcas'ting three sepas rate pieces, which the slots in the sections increase,
' t the round tenons or trunnions t` in recesses, which `dac., will prevent prevents the grate being drawn forward except with diliiculiy,l and'when once displaced, cinders, ashes,
` perfect readjustment of parts by `iilling-said recesses.
plan `or top view of our im.-v
`as shown anddescribed.
i Other objections exist,` which it is unnecessary to enumerate.
` A in the drawing represents the outer, and` B the'inner section of `our improved grate.
The outer section consists of the front ornppery cros`s-bar, a, rear or lower cross-bar, b, and of two grate-bars, c c, at each'end. This outer section is hung Vin the fire-place in the ordinary or suitable manner, and constitutes', outer part of afull grate.
The inner section, B, consists of'iall the grate-hars, d d, except those at'the ends, and of au upper crosspiece, f, and` lower Across-piece g, the said pieces fg Aserving to hold the bars e the proper distances apart.
' The ends of the bar gproject beyond the gratebars, .and form ears, h, for supporting the section B, on the rear of the section A.A
- The frontend of the inner section is supported by v .a hook, t, thatprojocts from the cross-piece a, the `piece fbeing notched to lit said hook, as shown.
lWhen the sections are secured together, asin the i drawing, the grate is complete. When `to be dumped,
the inner section is raised at its front end, and at the same' time drawn slightly forward, thus releasing it from the `hook i, when it will swing on the ears h. It will be seen that the ears slide on the bars c, so
that the section B may be tilted at one point as conveniently as another.
Having thus described our invention,
We claim as new., and desire to secure bv Letters Patent'- i The sliding detachable section B, f,d, g, h, and stationary section A, a, t', c,'b, constructed. and arranged FRANCIS. GLICK. URIAH KEGK.
