BANANA-STAND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 28, 1912.
Patented Nov. 18,1913.
Serial No. 739,161.
1'0 all whom it may 00" "em:
Be it known that l, HARvnY F. Rorsn, citizen of the United States, residing at Per- -rysville, in the county of Vermilion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Banana-Stands, ofwhich the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in display stands and the object of my invention is to provide a novel form of stand for supporting and displaying bananas, although the same may be used for displaying clothing or other articles desired.
A further object of my invention is to provide a display stand which will be extremely simple in construction and which may be positioned either from the floor or counter in the store or moved outside of the store to display the fruit and which is so arranged. that it may be moved when the fruit is in place.
Heretofore it has been customary to dis-' play bananas by hanging the bunch from the ceiling or other suitable support by a rope, the fruit thus displayed being in the way and being continually jostled against and bruised with the result that it rapidly decays and all juice and waste from the fruit drips upon-the floor and soils the same.
A further object of my. invention is to provide a display stand which will protect the fruit from injury and which is provided with a drip pan adapted to receive all drippings therefrom.
With these and other objects in view, my
invention will be more fully described, illus 'trated in the accompanying drawing, and
then specifically pointed out in the claims which are attached-to, and form a part of this application.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved display stand; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken at a point intermediate the two brace hoops and looking toward the bottom of the stand, this view being shown upon an enlarged scale;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.-
Corresponding and like parts'are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
The preferred embodiment of my invention includes a rear supporting standard 10 and forward supporting standards 11 and 12, all symmetrically spaced from each other of the forward standards 11 and 12 are braced together and held in proper spaced relation by a brace 14, the ends of which are riveted or otherwise secured to the standards, as shown at 15. The supporting standard 10 is straight throughout its length with the exception of its foot, whilethe forward supporting standards 11 and 12 have their upper ends bent rearwardly and outwardly and then inwardly to engage against opposite portions of the rear standard 10 to which they are secured by rivets or other fastening devices 16,thesc curved portions being designated in the drawing by the numerals 17 and 18. The main body of the stand, thus formed, is further strengthened and braced by a pair of hoop sections 19 and 20, the ends of which are bent laterally as shown at 21 and secured to the rear faces of the forward standards 11 and 12 by rivets 22, while the intermediate portions of the hoop sections engage against the rear edge of the rear standard 10 and are bent inwardly upon either side thereof to surround the standard upon three sides as shown at 23, being secured in place by rivets 24. By this means, the display stand is properly stiffened and braced and at the same time the rearwardly curved arms 17 and 18 and hoop sections 19 and 20 form guards for the fruit or other articles supported by the stand. A hook 25 is provided with a laterally directed shank having a downturned bifurcated portion 26, the members of which are positioned one upon either side of the upper endof the rear standard 10, bolts or rivets 27 being passed through said members and the standard to firmly secure the hooked shank in place with i the hook centrally disposed above the top of the stand. The bunch of bananas to be displayed may'bc suspended directly upon this hook by forcing the hook through the stem or may be suspended by a short cord, as.
preferred.
In order to provide means for catching all drippings from the fruit I provide a drip pan 28, preferably forme of relatively light sheet metal and so shaped and proportioned that it may be readily passed betweenthe forward standards and seated upon pins 29 extending from the inner faces of the stand ards .10, 11 and 12.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that I have constructed an exwith their lower ends bent outwardly toform supportlng feet 13. The lower portions I tremely simple and effective form of stand terial or to the exact details of construction illustrated and described, as various minor changes within the scope of my claims, may be made at any time, without in the slightest degree departing fromthe spirit of my invention. For instance, the standard 10 and hook 25 may be integrally formed, if desired.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A display'standincluding a vertically disposedstraight rear standard and a pair ofvertically disposed forward standards, all of said standards being symmetrically spaced apart, the upper end portions of the forward standards being bent rearwardly and outwardly and then inwardly and secured by their free ends to opposite sides of the rear standard adjacent its upper end, hoop sections secured by their ends to the rear faces of the forward standards and hearing rear edge of the rear standard, said hoop sections being bent inwardly adjacent the rear standard to bear against the sides thereof, fastening devices passed through said inbent portionsv and through the rear stand-' ard to secure the hoop sections in place, a drip pan mounted between the standards, and a forwardly directed hook carried by the upper end of the rear standard.
2. A display stand including a straight vertically disposed rear standard and a pair of vertically disposed forward standards, all of said standards being symmetrically spaced apart, hoop sections secured by their ends to the forward standards and by their intermediate portions to the rear standards and lying in spaced horizontal planes, an in clined hoo section'above t e previouslymentioned oop sections formed by bendin the upper end portions of the forwar standards rearwardly and outwardly and then inwardly and securing same to the rear standard adjacent its upper end, and a forwardly directed hook carried by the upper end of the rear standard and. extending in central position with respect to the three standards.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. HARVEY F. ROYSE. [Ls] \Vitnesses:
E. B. Rorsn, L. B. BREWER.
