Description
M. KOHN.- TAG AND GUARD THEREFOR. APPLICATION FILED DEC. 27, 1910.
1,078,733. Patented- Nov. 18, 1913,
are are.
W MONROE KOI'IN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mormon Kornv, a citizen-of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tags and Guards Therefor, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanymg drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for one of its objects to produce a tag which will permit a ring or a link of a chain to be fastened thereto in a simple and effective manner.
A'further object of my invention is to provide a simple and novel guard for a ringreceiving opening in a tag or other device which will permit a ring to be inserted and removed at will, normally holding the ring securely in place so as to prevent its accidental detachment.
The various features of novelty whereby my invention is characterized will hereinafter be pointed out with particularity in the claim; but for a full understanding of my invention and of its objects and advantages, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan of a tag blank made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a ring or link attached thereto; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the tag complete with the guard for the opening receiving the detachable ring or link; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the guard open; Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 8, a
portion of the guard being broken away; Fig. 6 is a view on an enlarged scale looking toward the right in Figs. 3 and 5; Fig. 7 is an enlarged plan view of the guard; and Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 7 showing the guard and a part of the tag.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a flat metal tag of any suitable form and, for the sake of brevity, I shall hereinafter refer to this member as a tag, desiring it to be understood that thereby I mean any device .to which it is desired to attach one or more loops, rings or links, or other devices having holes therein. In one end of the member is an opening B extending inwardly through the edge of themember. In the arrangement Specification of Letters Patent.
TAG AND GUARD THEREFOR.
shown the body of the and arranged a short distance from the adjacent edge of the tag, there being a branch opening extending therefrom through the edge.
C is a guard pivoted on the tag at one side of the opening at 0. Generally speaking the guard comprises a portion adapted to close the mouth of the opening B and a portion to abut against a part of the tag to prevent the guard from swinging in a counter-cloclnvise direction from the position indicated in Fig. 8, and uncovering the mouth of the opening. To secure a. link, loop or ring to the tag, the guard is swung into the position indicated in Fig. a, uncovering the mouth of the opening; the link, loop or ring is slipped into the opening past the guard; and the guard is then swung back into its closing position indicated in Fig. 3. A pull upon the link, loop or ring after attachment, simply serves to press the rear end of the guard against the tag, it being impossible to pull the tag loose without breaking the guarc.
In the preferred form of catch illustrated, the guard is made of resilient sheet metal bent so as to fit over the edge of the tag adjacent to the opening. The body of the tag is cut away so as to form fingers 0 which are adapted to lie across the mouth of the opening on opposite sides of the tag. At the other end of the guard are ears 0', which also lie on opposite sides of the tag in the closing position. By making the guard of spring metal and springing the ears 0 together slightly at their free ends, as indicated in Fig. 7, the ears grip the tag between them in the closing position of the guard, as indicated in Fig. 8, and frictionally hold the guard in place. It will now be seen that by making the opening B in the form of a round hole having a neck, the guard fingers may overlie the neck and serve to complete the circular contour of the main portion of the hole; thus permitting an attached ring or the like to slip freely around in the opening without meeting shoulders or projections.
It is sometimes desirable to fasten one end of a chain or the like permanently to a tag and to provide a detachable connection for the other end. The arrangement just described affords the detachable connection and my invention also contemplates an additional feature for permitting the perma- Patented Nov. 18, 1913.
Application filed. December 27, 1910. Serial No. 599,316. 7
opening is circular nent connection to be made easily and simaly. To this end I form in the tag at one side of the opening B a second opening D; the metal of the tag being split between the two openings.
In making the tag blanks they are preferably stamped in a distorted form as shown in Fig. l, a lip a, forming a part of the boundary of each of the openings being given an ofiset so as to leave between the two openings a channel wide enough to permit a link or the like, E, to be introduced into the opening D through the opening B. The lip a is then pressed down to the position shown in Fig. 2, shutting off communication etween the two openings ant giving to the tag its completed form.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a neat and simple arrangement for detachably securing a ring or the'like in such a manner that it cannot be accident-ally released, together with means for quickly and easily making a permanent connection between like parts.
While I have described in detail only a single preferred form of my invention, 1
do not desire to be limited to the details l of this particular form, but intend to cover all devices which come within the terms employed in the definition of my invention as set forth by the appended claim.
I claim:
A metal tag member having an opening extending inwardly through one edge, said member having a second opening at one side of the aforesaid opening, the metal of the tag being split between said openings so as to allow a ring to be introduced into the said second opening by passing it through the first opening while the split portion of the tag is spread apart and then be closed again to lock the ring in the second opening, and a guard for said first opening, the metal of the tag adjacent to said openings being adapted to be bent so as to close the passage between the openings and leave the first mentioned opening open from the edge of the tag.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
