Description

J. F. KELIHER.
COLLAR BUTTON.-
APPLICATION FILED DBO. 4, 1911.
1,078,782. Patented Nov. 18 1913.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR.
W% I I rm/v51 JAMES F. KELII-IER, OF INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI.
COLLAR-BUTTON.
T0 aZZ whom z't may concern Be it known that'I, JAMEs F. KELIHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of J ackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar- Buttons, of which the following is a speci fication.
My invention relates to improvements in collar buttons and my object is to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive button of this character which can be readily placed in position or removed from a neck-band and collar, and when in position will be reliably secured from accidental displacement.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be made tothe accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of myimproved collar button. Fig. 2 is a side view of the collar button. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the collar button. Fig. 4t is a front elevationof the collar button with the head thereof in dotted lines. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of the collar button with the rear plate thereof removed. Fig. 6 is a sectional view, partly in elevation, of the head and shank forming part of the collarbutton.
l designates the main body of the collar button terminating at its rear end in a circular flange 2, which acts as a stop in limiting the forward movement of the button when placing thesame through a hole in the neck-band of a shirt. The forward end .of body 1 is provided with a pair .of V- shaped shoulders 3, disposed at opposite sides of an opening 4, extending axially through the body 1 for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
.5 designates the head of the button, which is provided with a centrally-disposed rearwardly-extending shank 6, projecting through opening 4 and provided at its rear end with a circular, convex spring 7 said spring being held under tension by the inner surface of flange 2 and the riveted end 8 of the shank 6, to reliably hold head 5 against the forward end of body 1, as shown in Fig. 1. Spring 7 and the riveted end 8 of shank 6 are arranged within the concave rear end 9 of body 1 and covered with a back-plate 9 to prevent them from contacting with the neck of the wearer. Back- Specificati'on of Letters Patent.

Fig'. 1.
The inner end 10 of head 5 is concaved to 'fit' theshoulders 3, which slope downward toward their out-er pointed ends. The inner or adjacent ends of shoulders 3 terminate more abruptly than the outer ends to leave a space 11 centrally of the forward end of the body 1, said space being of just sufficient width to receive the rear end of head 5 when the same is turned crosswise to the forward end of body 1, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and a. Head 5 is rounded at its forward end, so that it can be readily pushed through a button-hole and in order to facilitate the passage of head 5 and body 1 through a button-hole, said head and body-portion are made elliptical in front elevation, as shown by Fig. 4:, to conform more nearly to the shape of the button-hole.
In practice head 5 is adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 1, to coincide with the body 1, so that the button can be readily pushed through the holes of a neck-band and the over-lapping ends of a collar to secure the same together. After the button has been thus placed in position, it is reliably secured from accidental displacement by flange 2 and head 5, which latter is rotated one-fourth of a revolution to bring it crosswise to body 1, and prevent said head from passing backward through the button-holes. lVhen the head is rotated one fourth of a revolution, or to the position in dicated by the dotted lines Fig. 4, it is drawn into the space 11 between the shoulders 3 by the spring 7, which coaots with said shoulders in reliably holding the head in crosswise position until grasped and turned back to its original position, when it is reliably held by the shoulders 3 entering its rear concave end 10.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A button composed of a body having a major bore of uniform diameter throughout and having a pair of opposite shoulders atone end and having its opposite end flared outwardly to form a circular flange, a back plate having its peripheral edge rolled over said flange, a head having a shank of equal diameter throughout. that is received in the bore and having an abutment formed on its inner end, a circular concave-convex spring 10 shank of the head so as to receive the rear end of the head in one posit-ion of the latter, the concave face of said spring plate facing the flared end of the body.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in the presence of two Witnesses.
JAMES F. KELII-IER.
