Application filed December 2, 1910. Serial No. 595,230;
To all whom it may concern: H
Be it known that I, BURT A. Pn'rnnsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bobbin-l /lagazines for Doifers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for replacing filled bobbins upon spinning frames with empty bobbins, and refers particularly to a magazine adapted for use with such machines.
Doifer magazines must be lifted onto and off the doiier, and therefore it is desirable that the magazine be as light as possible without sacrificing the strength of construction necessary to withstand rough handling.
It is the object of my invention to provide a bobbin magazine for doffers which shall combine lightness, strength and durability in the greatest possible measure.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of a magazine embodying the features of my invention, the magazine being shown as filled with bobbins. Fig. 2 is a fragmental vertical section through the magazine on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a fragmental vertical section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmental inner side view of a rectangular frame comprised in the magazine. F ig. 5 is a transverse sectional view of the removable bottom for the magazine. said bottom. Fig. 7 is a sectional view illustrating a constructional detail of the magazine.
The magazine comprises an upper and a lower rectangular frame 1 and 2 each preferably formed of an integral length of channel bar, the ends of the bar being preferably welded together so as to form a seam less frame. In order to adapt the magazine to contain a number of vertical tiers of bobbins, I provide at opposite sides of the magazine a series of short vertical partitions 3 and 4. Each series of partitions consists of folds formed in an integral piece of sheet metal, the upper and lower edges of the sheet being suitably secured to the frames 1 and 2. The folds 3 and 4 constitute the partitions, the portions 5 between said folds form two vertical walls of the magazine,
Fig. 6 is a sectional detail of and the opposite edge portions of the metal sheet form partial vertical walls 6.
In the present embodiment the bobbins are intended to be arranged with the tips thereof extending in the same direction. The partitions 8 are therefore spaced apart at distances corresponding with the diameter of the butts of the bobbins, while the par titions 4: are made thicker than the partitions 3 in order to provide correspondingly narrow spaces for the reception of bobbin tips.
7 are filler plates or distance pieces placed between the frames 1 2 and the portions 6 at the tip side of the magazine.
In the form of magazine selected to illustrate the invention. the frames 1 and 2 and the sheet metal walls are secured together by means of rivets 8. In order to provide a considerable area of contact between the parts, the rivet holes may be countersunk as at 9, and a bur or flange 10 formed around the rivet holes in the sheet-metal wall-portions, the rivet head confining said bur within the countersink and being flush with the inner face of the wall.
The present embodiment of the invention is designed for use upon a doii'er having a bobbin-feeding means located below the magazine and virtually forming the bottom of the latter. In order that the magazine may be conveniently loaded before it is placed on the dofler, the magazine is pro vided with a bottom 11 adapted to be in serted up "ardly into the space between opposite sides of the lower frame 2 and against stop flanges 12 on said frame.
13 are guide flanges or lugs on the ends of the bottom 11.
The ends of the flanges 12 are bent to form stops 14 to prevent lateral displacement of the bottom. In this instance the bottom is removably secured in place by means of a locking bar 15 pivoted at its midportion upon the lower side of the bottom, the ends of said bar being adapted to enter slots 16 in the lower frame 2. The end portions of the lower wall of each slot 16 are inclined upwardly toward the middle of the slot as shown in Fig. -l, in order to exert a wedging effect upon the locking bar and thus seat the bottom closely against the stop flanges 12.
17 are projections upon the lower side of the locking bar to permit of conveniently engaging the bar to turn it into and out of operative position. The pivotal movement of said bar is limited by lugs 18 on the bottom.
It Will be seen that a magazine constructed in accordance with my invention consists of few parts and is light, strong and durable.
I claim as my invention:
A bobbin magazine for dofi'ers comprising two opposite walls suitably secured together, each of said walls being of sheet metal, and each having partition-forming folds therein,
the folds upon one wall being spaced apart at distances corresponding to the diameter of a bobbin butt and the folds upon the opposite wall being spaced apart at distances corresponding to the diameter of a bobbin tip, said folds providing between them continuous spaces adapted to receive tiers of bobbins.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BURT A. PETERSON.
